Roto Trade Proposal: What am I Missing?
I'm relatively new to fantasy baseball, and the hardest thing for me to grasp has been the relative trade value of players, especially in my roto league. There have been deals done, by others, that I look at and say, "why in the hell did you make that move?'
This is a 12 team dynasty league, 5X5 scoring, with a 40 man roster and we keep 25. In addition we maintain a 10 man minor league roster. The latest offer proposed to me was
My: McCutchen and Josh Johnson
for
His: Adam Jones, Michael Brantley, and Chad Billingsly
Am I missing something..this looks like a horrible trade for me? I get trade offers like this from this owner all the time and have never come close to accepting one.
I love McCutchen but I would trade him, if the price is right, but that doesn't look close -->

That is a horrible offer
Most owners will never make you fair trade offers. What were some trades that were accepted in your league?
McCutchen
I wouldn’t trade him, but I do think Adam Jones is still young enough to improve from here.
Pedroia for Lackey? wow. terrible deal for the guy getting Lackey. Are there contracts involved?
The first deal is bad as well.
The third deal is fair.

Yeah
I was going to say much the same. There has to be more to the Pedroia/Lackey deal – if not, there should have been serious consideration given to vetoing it. One other thing is that, if records are kept through Yahoo or wherever the league is run, then it may not show prospects involved which can radically change some deals.
First trade is a bit less bad earlier last year, when people still had more faith in Snider. A lot of people were still quite high on him then.
Best option is to make an equally unbalanced counter offer and see what happens then. Some people just like making really bad offers though, and others like testing out a newbie in a dynasty league. One thing that’s important to consider is the cost of keeping someone – are there salaries involved, or do you have to give up draft picks, and also how long you can keep them for.
to veto or not to veto
I do not play in leagues with veto’s. Veto’s are for the crybabies of the roto world. If the trade is without collusion, live with it or ask the ‘dumb’ owner to leave your league.
veto
I will never play in a league where you vote on trades. Don’t like that rule/option at all.

Chances of Pedroia for Lackey
Straight up not being collusion? Not high imo.
What if?
What if the team owning pedroia has a ton of offense and is leading in the overall standings…and what if the team with lackey can move up a couple of spots on offense, thus moving past original pedroia’s competition…isn’t this a good trade?
It isn’t always about getting the best in trades.
thanks

Full disclosure,
I went back and double-checked the Pedroia for Lackey trade and it did involve more, that I missed. I didn’t include in the post, trades that involved prospects, because it remains to be seen what those trades will become. I did miss that one though
It was
Pedroia and Zach McCallister
for
Lackey, Paul Goldschmidt, and Charlie Blackmon
it does look a little better
..I’m used to getting lowballed on offers during fantasy football, so I’m guessing he’s just throwing offers out there hoping I might someday bite
It’s having th opposite effect
that info
makes the deal a little closer for me….Goldschmidt has some potential if he can reduce the Ks.

How About This Counter
My: MCCutchen and Johnson
Him:Adam Jones and Felix Hernandez
My SP is far and away my weakest position..my #1/#2 is Wainwright and Johnson..both injury risks…it killed me last season
Better
Defintely more reasonable, but I wouldnt do it. McCutchen is better than Jones and Johnson (when healthy…big ?) is on par with King Felix.
The problem with Josh Johnson
Is that he is a HUGE injury risk. And let’s be honest, that arm of his isn’t good in any spot. First TJ surgery, now shoulder issues. If you get 30 GS, you’re amazingly lucky and he’ll be elite. But honestly, there’s no reason to expect more than 20, and I’m not holding my breath for 15 starts.
I’d consider this trade. McCutchen may not turn into the perfect, top-5 OF we hope. His BA dropped, but his BABIP wasn’t ridiculously low considering. Maybe he gets 30/30, but PIT doesn’t help his value, and without a BA over .280 he’s not as spectacular as CarGo, Justin Upton, Kemp, Ellsbury.
Adam Jones won’t be the stud we hoped for either, but I see some upside to him. He’s really not that far behind McCutchen in potential, just minus some speed.
Upgrading Johnson to a sturdy Felix Hernandez, and getting an OF with still some growth upside who’s nearly as good as McCutchen? I’d take it. The question is whether the other team will part with Felix, the best player in the trade.
Johnson (when healthy…big ?) is on par with King Felix.
interesting to think about, actually.
Plus, JJ’s WAR is 18.6 for his career in 725 IP. That’s 0.026 WAR per Inning Pitched.
Felix’s is 29.1 in 1388 IP. That’s 0.02 WAR per Inning Pitched.
JJ’s WAR is actually higher per inning pitched. but that doesn’t mean a lot if you’re not pitching. I think Felix is more valuable than JJ and Adam Jones’ upside would tempt me to accept the deal (especially since SP is your professed “weakness”).

the problem is. he is never healthy
i had both JJ and king Felix last year in fantasy.
JJ was the best pitcher for like 5 weeks, then boom injured
