Fantasy Football Composite Staff Rankings: Quarterback

Which is #1?

With the fantasy football season rapidly approaching, the staff at Fake Teams has put hours of research together and decided to butt heads and come up with some rankings.  In doing so, composite positional rankings have been compiled to assist you in all upcoming drafts.  The upcoming weeks will provide rankings by position along with each staff member's arguments on differing individual ranks.  It is my pleasure to unveil the first of many Fantasy Football Composite Ranks, so please sit back and enjoy and feel free to use the comments section to have your voices heard.

QB Rankings after the jump compiled by the best of the best: TJ Mahoney (mahoney1213), Evan Levine (eklevine), Scott Kaliska (dukeallstar) and Kenny Stein (Humbled Fan)...

While almost everyone in the industry has the same quarterbacks we have listed in the top 10 above, the first 3 spots are a lot closer than I imagined - the Super Bowl MVP lands in the top spot followed closely by everyone's favorite 2010 waiver wire wonder and Mr. Gisele.  Once Big Ben is off the board, the position becomes awfully murky.  At that point in the draft, you could go in seemingly any direction you choose.

My 2 cents: Take a Top-10 QB from the list above.  If you decide to wait, or if the draft doesn't unfold in the manner you'd like, then pick 2 and play the match-ups.  Simply wait for a Stafford/Bradford/Kolb/Flacco type and go the 2-QB route.  2011 might be the year to take a quarterback early and reap the benefits.

QB out of top 10

I have never picked a qb in the top 5 rounds. I always wait until i at least have 2 rbs and 2 wrs most of time I wait until I have 3 rbs n 2 wrs. I have about 10 teams a year and make it to the final round 80% of the time and win about 3/5 of my leagues with that strategy.

The gap in fantasy points is smaller between the top qbs (except 2010 Vick) to say a Flacco Kolb, Cutler, Ryan, or Mcnabb(excluding 2010) then it is between the top 2 rbs n 1 wr u take in the 1st 3 rounds then the ones you would have to take a round later bc u picked a qb at the top of the draft.

My strategy is proven, it works every year and I just laugh when I see people poo pooing those late round qbs bc I win multiple leagues every year with those guys.

Just try this in 1 league, go RB,RB,WR, in the 1st 3 rounds. Now depending on whos where go RB,WR or WR,RB. I usually go RB,RB,WR,RB,WR. Then take a look at your board and see where the qbs I named are sitting. If you can squeeze a quality backup WR or RB to protect against injury or the bye week or top TE then do it. If the qb u want has a chance of going then take him in the 6th round but like I said if you can push 1 more round do it but get your qb in round 6-7. After that you wanna get those 3 players TE,RB,WR . Now your in round 10 you can now worry about getting a quality DST and then your back up qb. You dont want to do a match up every week imo like he said, have faith in your qb. You shouldnt be worrying back up qb until the 10th 11th round after already having 1qb 4 rbs 3-4 wrs 1 TE n possibly a DST. You will only need your backup for the bye so u only have to worry about getting the best matchup with your backup qb for the 1 week your starter has off. Other than that hes not that valuable. The rest is self explainable and user preference you can get 2 TE or 2 DST or another skill player, and your kicker. I dont care how good a kicker is DO NOT draft 1 before the final 3 rounds it is dumb plain and simple. Last year some goofy ass Saints fan still probably drunk off the super bowl parade picked the Saints kicker in the 5th round. LIke he thought bc he was clutch in the playoffs the guy was gonna reinvent the K position in football and put up 2o points more then any kicker he could have got in round 13. Besides that he must have forgot how inconsistent he was before the playoffs that year.

Anyway Im telling you guys use my strategy in at least 1 league you will see how effective it is. Afterwards(barring injury) you wont want to ever draft another way. You will make a ton of money(if u bet) or collect a lot of bragging rights with my system. Have fun guys.

Interesting.

I usually wait for QB since the last time I took a QB early, Tony Romo got hurt and single-handedly blew my season.

Typically I wait for the QB who may blow up – some instances in the past: Carson Palmer,Jay Cutler and Matt Schaub. However, this season after the top 12, most of the QB’s have HUGE question marks.

As for your strategy, I wouldn’t take 2 Tight Ends nor Defenses as I typically play matchups with defenses each week. You only need one TE and can stockpile breakout RB’s or WR’s rather than waste a spot on an extra Tight End. That’s for another column though…

Cassel

I was surprised he was ranked so low….what question marks does he have? Tougher schedule?

No Charlie Weis, number one schedule and a focus on the run game

Weis

I don’t think Weis leaving will change his value as Haley seems to want more input in the playcalling, no? Two offensive coordinators in his first two years as head coach says something to me.

Wish I wasn't so late on this...

I ranked Cassel higher than any other writer because I think he makes few mistakes, he’s got a #1 wide reciever, he’s got several other WRs that I think are very good including the rookie, he’s got a good TE, and his RB’s are good at catching out of the backfield. He’s maybe not a home run, but he’s more of a guaranteed double, which there’s a lot of value in.

He never said to take a QB in round 1...

Or any specific round. He suggested grabbing a top 10 QB. And your strategy is not ground breaking. It’s basic fantasy football.

Agree

I would also never take 2 defenses, nor 2 TEs. I would much rather gamble on clear cut backup RBs like Ringer, Jennings and others. If I need a replacement defense one can always play matchups.

I know there is injury risk with Stafford yet if he stays healthy he should end up top 10. I would definitely rank him ahead of Cassel and prefer his upside in a 1 QB league to Eli’s.

I’d drop Garrard. If the Jags struggle out of the gate they might turn to Gabbard after the week 9 bye.
