Closer info

Haven't seen this anywhere else on the site so I'll post it here (would have made it a fan shot, but for some reason I can't find the "create fan shot" button) according to Terry Collins, now that Mets Closer Jason Isringhausen has gotten his 300th save he will no longer be exclusively used as the closer. Mets set-up man Bobby Parnell will most likely get an opportunity to win the closer job for next year and since this season is already down the tubes he will probably have a long leash. With his great K numbers and solid ratios he is an immediate add and has good potential to help your team down the stretch. Add him ASAP.

Hm becasue the word count was red when I was under 150 and turned gree once I went over. I thought that meant I was under the limit

I’d be careful with Parnell – If you don’t need saves badly, I wouldn’t pick him up just yet. While his strikeout rates look good, his WHIP and ERA haven’t been looking that great mostly due to a very high BABIP and a high walk rate (nearly 4 per 9).

As of right now, I’d probably want him only if you can take the hit in WHIP and ERA. Despite his advanced numbers showing a bit better performance than what has actually happened, I’m not convinced that the BABIP and walk rate are flukes.

Valid point about the walks

but the BABIP? What makes you think that a .381 BABIP is sustainable on him? I know he’s a power pitcher which tends to increase LD% but that should translate to a .320 BABIP tops. Any time a pitcher with a 2.96 FIP, 3.08 xFIP and a high K rate has been promoted to the closer role I’ll take my chances. If he wins the closer role he’ll probably wind up on a lot of my teams next year.

I don’t think that .381 is necessarily sustainable, but he still makes me nervous. He reminds me of someone like Carlos Marmol, who could be great when he is on, but could make you want to throw things at the walls when he isn’t. I do think that he should be owned in most leagues based on the fact that they are giving him save opportunities, but I don’t think they are necessarily going to be pretty some days.

His BB rates

Arent quite as bad as Marmol, but I think that is a pretty good comp in terms of lots of Ks and lots of BBs. Although Marmol has a career 3.74 FIP and 4.23 xFIP so he’s not necessarily a guy who has been screwed by BABIP and luck. As a free pickup Parnell is worth it, I guess we’ll just have to see what he does over the rest of the season to determine his value come draft day

to “season down the tubes.” We’re almost at .500! For a Mets fan, that is a THRILLING season. I couldn’t be happier.

Yep

The intelligence, the actual baseball knowledge, the objectivity, the ability to spell, reason, form cogent points, in fact, all of the qualities you do not possess certainly make sense coming from a Mets fan, because I have yet to meet a Yankees fan who had any of them.
