Dynasty League Trade
14 team dynasty league. I needed to clear up some roster space and also wanted some more young assets.
I traded: Dan Uggla, Matt Joyce, Austin Jackson
I got: Pablo Sandoval, Jair Jurrjens, A Second Round Pick in our Minor League Draft (usually a top 50-100 prospect)
The way i figured, Uggla I'm selling high on, both with is hot streak and his age. Matt Joyce's splits are scary, and he may only be a 20 HR .270 guy. Austin Jackson's K rate seems high and even if he rebounds from the sophomore slump still only seems to be a steal type player.
Meanwhile got two 25 year olds coming off career seasons. Can figure out their value in offseason and sell high or keep them.

Uggla
is one of the more consistent fantasy hitters as he will always hit 30 HRs and drive in 90 or so. What you cannot predict is his BA.
But, you get PAblo who gives some power and solid BA, and Jurrjens who has outperformed expectations coming off the injury last season.
I say it is a fair deal…..

yeah i know
and i have loved owning him, just he showed how inconsistent he can be, and he does turn 32 next year, so thought a decline might be coming soon, i thought this was selling high

Consistency.
Year over year there is truth to the that. But he is one of the streakiest hitters in baseball.
Selling him now was a good move bruins.

I don't know
Ron Shandler says fantasy owners should try to draft guys who are more consistent year in and year out…..when you have someone like Andre Ethier going from 20+ HRs to 10 this year, guys like Uggla, even though they are streaky, provide some balance for your roster. I own him at $24 in an NL-only league and am considering keeping him next year even after his horrific season this year.

Depends on scoring system
in a H2H league this year, Uggla has likely been a team-killer, and may continue to be with his streakiness. In that kind of league, as in football, consistency is a plus. But in a season-long system like a roto league or a cumulative points league, he’s probably going to end the season with similar stats as previous years.
by pooptallica on Aug 16, 2011 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions
Well, I'm not Ron Shandler, but I have to disagree. I wouldn't draft Uggla to be my starting 2nd baseman knowing he might be bench-worthy for 2 months of the season or more.
And his rollercoaster batting averages in odd-numbered years, dont make him all that consistent year-to-year either.

In addition...
We talk about consistency saying he’s always had 30 hr seasons, but there is a point where he breaks down, and he’s 31 and showed signs of weakness this season, so I thought I was selling high since its only a matter of time before he begins to weaken.
In particular, I was thinking of a certain low BA, yet extraordinarily consistent HR threat who hit 40 HR with regularity but turned 31 this year…Adam Dunn
Obviously there’s not a ton of parallels and there are different circumstances to Dunn, but I think this was a great return on Uggla and co.
by gobruins12345 on Aug 16, 2011 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Difference with Dunn
is that he went to the AL this year, where the holes in his swing were exploited more than ever.
I don’t hate the selling of Uggla by any means, I just don’t think he’s quite as much of a risk as you do, but I don’t feel super strongly about it, either.
I said push
But I really think Jurrjens has hit his peak this year. He’ll be an OK starter for the rest of his career but I don’t see him putting up a whole bunch of sub-3 ERA seasons
yeah i agree
not crazy about jurrjens but i thought it was great value, i really really dislike ajax and figured he was nothing more than a throw in, i felt i was selling high on uggla and joyce

austin jackson is gonna be the shite one day,
maybe next year. and jair jurjjens is kinda like ubaldo, one year wonders.

hm you think?
idk his k rate and stats so far just lead me to believe hes not really gonna become anything of value

Dont worry
Its just classic LTTRLT (Lawrence Taylor the real LT). Gut reactions are all that he knows. Well that and overdrafting Giants players. Jackson is really not a big part of this deal, the key part is the rest of the deal, and if you can convince someone that Jair has some value you can really get some value here.
thanks i appreciate the input
i even like jurrjens tho as a top 50 pitcher, hes almost a case of a guy who ppl say hes overrated so much that he starts to be a little underrated, hes only 25 and has two under 3 era seasons already under his belt, but yeah i think this value gave me two young assets that can become cornerstones or at least good trade bait, while selling high on the guys i gave up, i guess it seems some ppl disagree, but i thought the trade was a no brainer
by gobruins12345 on Aug 15, 2011 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Well
yes he does have 2 seasons of below 3 ERA but that is with a 3.68 FIP and 4.28 xFIP one of those years and a 3.68 FIP and 3.93 xFIP the other year
good point
i probably should take more advanced pitching statistics into account when evaluating talent, i tend to go more with basic stats and scouting reports, like sickels gave him a pretty glowing review a year ago saying he sees a possible cy young season down the line (maybe that was this year?), where would you rank him? pre-injury i would say he was a top 30 pitcher, i think he can maintain that status for the next few years with maybe slipping into the top 50 some year and into the top 20 with one or two peak years, but i obviously have seen the fangraphs articles all screaming to sell high but they also havent written him off completely, i think i got him at a fair price
two articles i considered the most before doing the trade:
http://www.minorleagueball.com/2010/3/24/1388641/not-a-rookie-jair-jurrjens
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/jair-jurrjens-the-new-cain/
by gobruins12345 on Aug 15, 2011 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I think top 30 is fair
But since that article his ERA has gone up quite a bit and I think you can probably find someone that treats him as top 15 and will pay accordingly
yeah regardless
besides joyce, i dont see uggla or ajax outplaying their current value

Ha
well every time you mention a “great pick” that you got its been a Giants player. Which isn’t to say that they dont have some great fantasy contributors, but as a Giants fan I think you might be falling victim to your own bias
well i did draft a lot of giants players.
but they were all steals. ( i mean eli in the 7th)
the only one i probably reached was hakeem nicks with the 5th pick in the 2nd. but if he stays healthy, he gets at the least 12 TD’s. mario is gonna get at least 8 td’s and 850 yards. and i picked bradshaw, so i had to take jacobs. and ofcourse the giants Defense, which had the most turnovers last year.
i still have a pretty solid team, and am close to getting andre johnson.

Eli in the 7th is only a "steal" for you.
That’s kind of the point.
And did you really draft Eli, Hakeem, Mario, Jacobs, Bradshaw, and the Giants D?
Sheesh, the internet really is embarrassed for you.

ADP for Eli
on Sportsline is 81st pick. That puts him towards the end of the 7th round. Tell me, exactly, how drafting someone in the 7th round, who is generally being drafted in the 7th round, is a steal? If his ADP was the 5th round, then it would be a steal, but “steal” is a relative term, and it does not apply here.
its a steal because those sites are usually wrong.
and the probability of him throwing anywhere near 25 int’s is next to none.
and the fact that his TD and Passing yard #‘s have went up every year. and his int’s down every year excluding last

Ok, you're just not very smart
The site can’t be “wrong” when all they are doing is averaging the position that a player is drafted in actual, real-life drafts. It is not an analyst’s opinion, it is the actual reality of where a player is being taken. That is why it is called Average Draft Position, not player ranking, not projection. Jesus, you’re thick.
nope. its wrong.
its a steal

When I first read that
I thought you said Nicks 5th overall. He’s OK 5th overall in the second round for a 12 team league if Calvin, Andre, Fitz, and Roddy were all gone. Eli in the 7th is OK as well. Not spectacular but not terrible. Its exactly where he’s gone in 2 of the 3 drafts I’ve had so far. I don’t like predicting 8 TDs for a #2 WR unless their Quarterback has the last name Manning. And their first name starts with any letter A-D or F-Z. Not that high on Bradshaw, and I think the “handcuffing RBs” idea is kinda bogus, and you actually get more value going for a breakout candidate. Giants D is meh for fantasy. They had the most turnovers last year but thats an insanely volatile stat year to year.
i'd probably take him over fitz.
not because he’s more talented (fits is the 2nd best wr around).
but because nicks is gonna get at the very least 12 TD’s.
well, im not gonna start jacobs or manningham.
i have ray rice, dez bryant, dallas clark, and mike williams (tb). rounding out my starting lineup (with justin Tuck as my defensive player).
but, jacobs is one of the most unique hb’s around. nobody has his blend of speed and power, and thos his carries were down last year. they are supposidly going way up this year.
as for the giants D. they have been consistentley at the top for sacks, and now with a more turnover minded DC. they should get around the same number of turnovers. especially since they are setting kenny phillips loose this year

AJax Ks too much
and his lack of real power makes that a huge detriment to his fantasy value. Better real-life player than fantasy.
LT over there just has a seriously misguided boner for anyone who ever sniffed being a Yankee. You’ll do well to ignore him.
Good deal.
Got rid of Uggla at the end of his streak, so he will return to season numbers from before. Panda and Jurrjens for Uggla and Joyce is a push right now, but both of the players you got will perform better for years to come. The draft pick is worth more than Jackson.
Exactly my thoughts
Thanks.. This was my exact reasoning. I rebuilt my team and not looking to make a run for 2-3 years and I already sold a lot of older guys for prospects/rookies since that’s where the market it at. But I always thought rebuilding should be down with young talent, and its very rare to get two promising 25 year olds for what I gave up IMHO.
