I currently own Darnell in a deep keeper league with a deeper (60+ prospects) minor league system. I was able to get Darnell for cheap during the offseason and I'm trying to turn him for a net profit, and I've got a shot to acquire Desmond Jennings. One area of need for my MLB squad is speed, and my LF situation is also tenuous. However, I'm not a contending team this year (12 team league) and likely not next year, so this move (or non-move) would be helping me more in 2013.
More after the jump....
Chances are, Darnell gets flipped to the OF (possibly even LF) but I'm not sure how well his offense will play in Petco. I've heard several folks claim that San Antonio suppressed his value, and he should explode now that he is in Tucson, but his peripherals (mainly, his BABIP) don't seem sustainable outside of a half-season or so. I figure Darnell will become a .280-.290 hitter who takes plenty of walks, and hit 17-20 HR in a season.
Jennings is just waiting for the dreaded Super Two light to be turned off so that he can be promoted and installed in LF in Tampa. He's maintained decent on-base skills and upped his power production. His bat should play about the same in Tampa as it has in the minors so far, save a little extra pop.
Until this year, Jennings was the more heralded prospect, and many considered him the better overall player. Both are a little bit on the older side of prospecthood (both are 24, Jennings being 3 months older), but for fantasy purposes, looking towards the next few years, who would you rather have - Jennings or Darnell?
