Tough call
especially not knowing more about the situation. But since it doesn’t appear that DWright’s injury makes him a “cheaper” freeze for next year, I went with the Ryan Howard side. Wandy is a good pitcher on an awful team, and simply isn’t THAT much better than a top free agent pitcher to balance out the difference between Ryan Howard and David Wright.
Does team A badly need pitching? By trading for David Wright it seems that team A might actually be out of contention for this year. What is the situation relative to standings and contention for both teams?
I need to know more
Specifically the rest of your roster. And then I’ll tell you which 2 players are better (IMO, of course).
Here is the current situation
I normally do not say which team is me so that I can get as honest feeback as possible. Plus I loathe when people ask for analysis on a trade where they just flipped Matt Joyce & John Danks for Hunter Pence & CC Sabathia and they want to know how awesome their team/roster is.
Currently I am in 5th place with 77 points where there is a tie for 1st with 90 points a piece. The top 3 teams have been in those spots since May so hope seems to be dwindling by the day in terms of placing this year. The top 3 teams all get money.
Here is my current roster. Feel free to take shots and tell me how terrible it was to select Francisco Liriano one pick before Jared Weaver.
C – Arrencibia
1b – Fielder
2b – Neil walker
3b – Cuddyer
SS – Hanley Ramirez
Of – Bourn
Of – BJ upton
Of – Logan Morrison
Util – Howard
Bench – Wigginton, Melky Cabrera
SP – Hamels
SP – Hanson
SP – Liriano
SP – Kuroda
SP – Hellickson
SP – Stauffer
SP – Masterson
SP – McCarthy
RP – Marmol
RP – Putz
RP – Madson
DL – Jonathan Sanchez
DL – Zambrano
I understand not wanting to say which team you are...
…I was kind of hoping you’d leave out the 2 players involved in the trade, and then I’d tell you which 2 players I thought would fit better on your team.
Anyway, you would directly be switching Howard in the lineup for Wright, since Cuddyer would move to UTIL. Depending on how Wright comes back, this is a tossup. It could be a really good deal or a really bad deal. Personally, I think Wright is going to play well in the second half.
You’d be replacing Bourne with Cabrera, which is taking a HUGE hit in the SB department, and I don’t have faith that Melky can keep up his good numbers for the rest of the season. Getting Wandy would be nice, but he’s on a bad team as pooptallica pointed out.
Overall, I think I’d rather have Howard and Bourn.
My bad
I wish I would have done it the way you suggested, but oh well. I just recently picked up Melky so if he falls off at all I do not mind dropping him. In fact I picked up him up largely in case I were to do this trade. I have been weighing this decision for the last couple of days and just cannot make up my mind. I am scraed of getting burned, but I also don’t want to look back and wonder why I did not trade for David Wright when given the chance.

Question for 2012
Who would you rather have as a keeper for next year? Ryan Howard or David Wright?
Howard
Without much question. The Phillies will be a better team than the Mets next year by far, thus further increasing Howard’s RBI and R value over Wright.
If I’m you, I don’t do this trade. You already have decent young pitchers in Hanson and Hellickson. Wandy is not an improvement.
I'd give it question.
1B is deep, 3B is shallow. Add to that, if this was a NL-only league, it would heavily lean in favor of Wright.
I think long-term we are undervaluing Wright just because he’s been hurt. But he is still a 20/20 player with potential for more. I also won’t be surprised if he gets traded and into a better situation than NY.

Wandy
Would add depth more than anything. The league has a 2000 IP limit so the more starters you have that are good, the better. I get what you are saying though. Coming into 2011 most drafts selected Howard before Wright so I was not sure if 2012 was looking the same.
I would do it
Wright is younger than Howard (albeit not by that much) and plays a tough position to fill. For this season you are basically just replacing howard with Wright but next season keeping Fielder and Wright give you more draft flexibility than Fielder and Howard do.
basically
filling 3B for next season with Wright is a lot more valuable than filling yout util with Howard. Keeping util open allows you to get in on some of the sleeper 1B (of which there will be some) while still allowing you to take a 3B if there is one you really want that badly
3B
Wright being a 3B is why I am even considering the trade in the first place. If I trade for him I would be keeping Wright, Hanley and Fielder as my 3 for next year with Hellickson as my rookie keeper. I like that they would give me power, average and speed to start off next season. I just don’t want to throw in the towel for this season and ruin my team with this trade if Wright does not come back from the injury.

Another aspect
My team is in last for team avg. Howard’s average has certainly not helped my team. Will Wright bounce back and be the .300 hitter he was the last couple of years. Also does anyone have read on when Wright will return and how healthy he is?
Wright is expected back on July 22 now
I traded Hosmer (and a few others who didn’t matter) for Wright a few weeks ago. He can’t come back soon enough!!!
Apparently he is starting his rehab assignment this week
He should get back to .300 since he played a lot of the beginning of the year with his back injury
Wright vs Howard
Personally, I would rather have Wright than Howard, partly because of his position eligiblity (as everybody above pointed out). The reason I said to NOT do the deal is because of Michael Bourn. His SBs are huge.
Crawford vs Wright
Would it change your opinion on the trade if I received Crawford back instead of Wright? How would you rank 1-3 for next year between Howard, Wright & Crawford.

Personally
I think it goes Wright, Crawford, Howard
re
In a vacuum, I agree with revans and go Wright, Crawford then Howard. But, I think there are a lot of question marks with Wright right now, so I’d consider putting CC over him. With this trade, you’d be trading Bourn for CC and Howard for Wandy. I just think the upgrade from Bourn to CC doesn’t quite overcome the downgrade from Howard to Wandy (which in actuality would be Howard to Melky and then you get Wandy as a bonus).
I still think I’d stick with Howard and Bourn.
tough. but id go with b
