Next Offensive Callup

OK, so Mike Trout is up now, for however brief a moment, and he looks pretty decent. Dustin Ackley has been raking since being called up. Hosmer has been decent, at times brilliant.

Who's next? Who is the next offensive callup to produce immediately? The Diamondbacks have done nothing to stymie speculation about Paul Goldschmidt. Desmond Jennings has been on the tip of everyone's tongue all season. Leonys Martin has nothing left to prove in the minors, and Texas could use another OF, especially with the injury-prone nature of their starters. Jesus Montero is another one who has been mentioned since Opening Day, and, while he hasn't had a great season in AAA so far, could easily join the Yanks for the stretch. And Brett Lawrie was all but sitting on a plane to Toronto when he broke his hand, and figures to get the call quickly once he returns.

So who do you see as the next important offensive callup? Who's first, who has the biggest impact, who sticks for good?

Desmond Jennings

Unless Jennings was just traded, he doesn’t play for SDG.

Ha

I have Jennings and Maybin on the same page of notes. Derf.

by pooptallica on Jul 12, 2011 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I go Goldschmidt

Lawrie will be shortly behind him and will stay for good when he is called up. Jennings is hurt so probably not him, Montero depends on whether or not the Yankees make a trade

by revans on Jul 12, 2011 4:49 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree

Why would the Yankees trade him? Because Jorge Posada is such a better DH? Doesn’t make sense.

by pooptallica on Jul 12, 2011 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

because they need pitching

unless you believe that Hughes is back to form (which he’s not, IMO) and they can rely on Colon and Garcia.

I also think Montero is over-hyped because he’s a Yankee. He’s having a bad season, and because he’s a Yankee people are saying it’s because he’s “bored”. Give me a break! They are hyping him up so they can trade him – like they should’ve done for Lee before. And this is from a Yankee hater!

I agree

Montero will be traded.

To Where?

I don’t expect him to be traded, but I’m certainly open to entertaining the possibility.

The Yankees won’t trade him within the division, and he likely has to stay in the AL as a DH and part-time 1B, so where does he go? Has to be this year, to a non-contending team, in the AL Central or West, right? One that has a big arm to give up?

Way I see it, that pretty much leaves Oakland, who could sure as hell use a 1B/DH with some pop, but Montero is kind of the antithesis of Oakland baseball.

Curious for other input here, though, I’m intrigued by Montero.

by pooptallica on Jul 20, 2011 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Very good question!

I have no idea to where. Honestly, I haven’t thought much about it, but I think you’re 100% spot on that he needs to go to the AL, and he likely won’t be traded in the East (unless it’s a no-brainer). I don’t know. I’ll have to think about that. I know it’s in the AL East, but I could see him going to Toronto, though I’m not sure what Toronto would have to offer. I could very easily see him going to any of the AL West teams not in Texas.

doubt it.

thhe yanks aren’t gonna do any big trades this deadline imo.
i doubt they sell the farm to a stubborn colorado GM. and their aren’t nearly as many big names on the block as last year.

Mesoraco

I firmly believe Devin Mesoraco wil not be up this season, but I leave room to be incorrect on that. Kipnis was definitely an important omission, as he may, in fact, be the next callup.

by pooptallica on Jul 13, 2011 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Mesoraco

I think he’ll be up after the Reds trade one of their Catchers. If this is the case, will he be given enough playing time to be rosterable?

by rmarx on Jul 13, 2011 9:29 AM EDT reply actions

I think so

he has the better bat, and is good enough defensively to play daily. I own him in a keeper league and am keeping my fingers crossed he is called up.

hmm...

I have Posada right now (I know – not a good place to be). I’m considering picking Mesoraco up and stashing him on my bench for the next couple weeks. I’d only have to drop Ian Stewart or Chris Davis, neither of which should even be on most fantasy teams.

by rmarx on Jul 13, 2011 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Do it

If Stewart or Davis are all you’d have to drop, why not pick up Mesoraco? Even though I feel the odds are against him being up this year before September, if at all, he’s definitely got higher upside than either of those scrubs, on the off chance he does see significant PT this season.

i got jorge too. and if mearco is called up. i may have to part ways with my 2nd favorite DH (still miss Godzilla)

Brett Jackson

While may not be on the level of some of these guys, Brett Jackson is a pretty consensual top 50 prospect who the Cubs have said numerous times they may call up in the short term future

by gobruins12345 on Jul 20, 2011 2:24 PM EDT reply actions

JUST KIDDING

It’s Jose Altuve! I honestly didn’t expect to see him up so soon, esp. with the Astros nowhere near contending and his, what, one month in AA? But the “Venezuelan Pedroia” has shown in the minors that he can hit, so I’m excited to see what he can do.
