Closer Report for Week 10

News and Notes From Around the Bullpen

  • The big news of the week was the request by Joakim Soria to be removed from the closers' role. Manager Ned Yost named Aaron Crow as the interim closer, but I have to imagine that they are going to try and get him back in the spot before too long. Until then, Crow appears to be the guy you want. We'll know better when the Royals give him a save opportunity.
  • Andrew Bailey returned last Sunday, but is still not able to pitch on back to back days yet. Until he does, either Grant Balfour or Brian Fuentes are your best options for saves.
  • Jose Contreras was activated from the disabled list, but Madson was used in the 9th, while Contreras was used in the 8th. He looks safe to me.
  • The Dodgers still didn't make it any clearer in their bullpen this week, as they had no save opportunities. Jonathan Broxton began throwing off a mound on Sunday, so he could be the one to get the majority of chances still this year.
  • David Hernandez pitched in the 8th 3 times this week, and looks like he could be the handcuff for Putz.
  • Chris Sale was called upon to get a 1 out save on Tuesday, but it was a situation where they wanted a lefty to face Adrian Gonzalez. I would still think Santos is fine.
  • Daniel Bard got the save on Sunday, but Papelbon had pitched in 3 of the previous 4 games.
