Is This A No-Brainer?
In my 12-team, long-term keeper league with 40-man rosters and a fairly complicated points-scoring system (not roto, not H2H) I have been offered
Carl Crawford and my choice of Hunter Pence or Trevor Cahill for Eric Hosmer.
The owner making the offer is out of the hunt this year, while I am right behind the leader. Now, I'm fairly set at SP, with Weaver, Hanson, Ogando, Hellickson, Wandy Rodriguez, Cueto, Latos, and Randy Wells coming off the DL soon, but Cahill is a stud and I could certainly flip an SP for something useful.
Pence, well, I know what I'm getting with him (.280, 25 HR, 90 RBI, or thereabouts).
My problem lies in the fact that I'm weak at 1B, with Trumbo and Napoli my only viable options after Hosmer (though Kendrys Morales will be a cheap freeze this off-season, provided he ever plays again). I'm really not looking forward to being gutted at 1B for the foreseeable future, and have projected Hosmer as my long-term 1B option for a couple of years now. I'm not thrilled to sell the farm for a chance to win this year, but is this trade really one I can say no to?

I should add
That Hosmer, in one week, has scored more than half the points Crawford has for the season.
Scoring System
Players accumulate points using the following system:
Hitters:
* Hit – 2.5 points
* At bats – (-0.5) points
* Walk – 1 point
* Double – 1 point
* Triple – 2 points
* Home Run – 3 points
* Run – 1 point
* RBIs – 1 point (No points for RBIs in excess of the number of total runs scored)
* Hit by pitch – 1 point
* Stolen Base – 2 points
* Caught stealing – (-2) points
* Double play – 1.5 points for 3B, 1 point for all others but 1B
* Error – (-2) points
* Outfield assist – 2 points
* Catcher throws out runner – 2 points
* Catcher win – 1 point (complete game & team wins)
Pitchers:
* Appearance – 1 point
* Out recorded – 1 point
* Strikeout – 0.5 points
* Walk – (-1) point
* Hit by Pitch – (-1) point
* Hit – (-1) point
* Earned Run – (-2) points
* Unearned Run – (-1) point
* Win – 6 points
* Loss – (-4) points for starters, (-5) for relievers.
* Save – 6 points (No points for saves in excess of total wins)
* Hold – 4 points
* Quality 6-innings – 4 points (ERA under 4.00, and 6+ innings)
* Quality 1-inning – 1 point (ERA under 4.00, and 1 – 5 2/3 innings)
Points are accumulated throughout the season, there are no “scoring periods” or anything like that. Also note that double, triple, and home run points are in addition to the 2.5 points for the hit.
Crawford, with his low BA, lack of power this season, and (thus far) low SB% (only 5 for 8) has scored 53 points. Hosmer has 27.5.
you wouldn't
if you were in a long-time keeper league. Hosmer is gonna be a MONSTER.

If anybody cares
I made the trade for Crawford and Pence, but sure as heck don’t feel great about it.
Wow!
I can very easily say that this is the most lopsided trade I’ve ever seen, ESPECIALLY in a keeper league. CC is in a funk but is going to be on a great hitting team for 7 more years!
A little more info
The team I traded Hosmer to already has Pujols and Miggy at 1B. He is now ready to trade Pujols, which will net him a tidy group of studs and/or stud prospects. This trade was definitely part of a larger, long-term strategy on his part. Pence is not keeper-level, so losing him, when he is out of the race this year, is nothing to him.

so...
basically he’s trading one keeper (CC) for another (Hosmer)? I don’t think anybody thinks that CC equals Hosmer….AND you also get another player. I think you and the other manager grossly overestimate Hosmer. He’s going to be a good-to-great player, but he’s nothing compared to CC in the Red Sox lineup.
Also, in a 12 team league with 40 man rosters, how does the other guy have Pujols, Miggy and CC?
Keeper league
Is the important thing to remember when asking how he has Pujols, Miggy, and Crawford (CC is confusing, as he also has Sabathia). He’s had Miggy since he was in A-ball, Pujols since his rookie year, and traded for Crawford this offseason.
And Hosmer is a true 5-tool player just at the beginning of a stellar career arc. Willing to bet he will be more valuable than Crawford in our league as soon as next year, if not this year. He has better power, a better hit tool, slightly worse speed than Crawford, and is much younger. Also, don’t underestimate the KC lineup. Gordon, Butler, Aviles and Francoeur are hitting this year, and Moustakas and Myers are ready to contribute next year. They are going to put up runs.
