Fantasy Baseball 2011: NL-Only League Draft Results
I participated in another NL-Only, 5 x 5 redraft league draft last night, and here are my results. I had the 2nd pick in the draft and went with Hanley Ramirez with the second overall pick, with the hope that he can hit for more power in 2011.
The rest of my draft results after the jump:
1-Hanley Ramirez-SS
2-Chris Young-OF
3-Mike Stanton-OF
4-Jayson Werth-OF
5-Casey McGehee-3B
6-Chad Billingsley-P
7-Adam Laroche-1B
8-Wandy Rodriguez-P
9-Brandon Belt-CI-yes, very early, and kinda regretting this pick
10-Alfonso Soriano-OF
11-Craig Kimbrel-CL
12-John Axford-CL
13-Ty Wigginton-2B
14-Jhoulys Chacin-P
15-Derek Lowe-P
16-Jonathan Nese-P
17-Ramon Hernandez-C
18-Jonathan Herrera-MI
19-Sean Burnett-CL
20-Kenley Jansen-RP
21-Scott Hairston-OF
22-Chris Heisey-U
23-David Ross-C
The first three rounds of this draft goes 1-11, then 11-1, then 11-1 again-a modified snake draft. The format of the first three rounds lead to my decision to take Chris Young with the #21 overall pick. I was actually happy to grab Mike Stanton late in the 3rd round, and followed that up with Jayson Werth, who should see plenty of nice pitches hitting in front of Ryan Zimmerman. I am hoping he steals 20 bases this year hitting in the two hole.
I went into this draft wanting to draft just my starting pitchers from the 2nd-3rd tier, leading me to draft Billingsley and Wandy-Rod in the 6th and 8th rounds. I decided that I wanted two closers in this league so i drafted Kimbrel and Axford back to back, and supplemented them with Burnett later in the draft. Burnett appears to be the closer in Washington to open the season.
My team has plenty of power, but just average SB guys. I have a couple of upside starters in Chacin and Niese to go with Lowe, Billingsley and Rodriguez. I could have drafted Shaun Marcum in the 9th round instead of Belt, but the hype surrounding him pushed me to take him-probably a few rounds too early.
Some suprising picks:
Cliff Lee-12th overall and 2nd SP taken
Michael Bourn-picked in 3rd round
Angel Pagan-4th round
Starlin Castro-6th round pick and 5th SS overall
Brandon Belt-9th round pick
Chris Young -2nd round pick, and 21st overall
Ricky Nolasco-picked before Zack Greinke, Wandy Rodriguez, Ryan Dempster and Ted Lilly among others

I gotta say
the guy who took Nolasco also took Bourn in the 3rd and Pagan in the 4th….and the rest of his draft was not great either….and….he had the first pick….took Pujols, but after that, I was not crazy about his draft.

lol
I like how you listed two of your own picks as surprising.

yeah
I got plenty of “who” and “that was early” comments after I took him….
I may have taken Young a round early, but wanted the hr/speed combo

Belt
looked really good yesterday but he’s probably going to be a replacement level 1B in fantasy this year. I’m not a huge Young fan but he does have legitimate 30-30 potential.

yeah
Took him a bit early. I totally forgot about him, but came across his name when looking at some prospect lists during the draft.

Also
I liked him better than what was left of the hitters….he had a really good at bat against Brioxton in the 9th with two outs. Was impressed.

Belt
should contend for ROY. Him and Freeman could put up similar numbers this year. I was surprised how fast he is. I could see Belt stealing a few, maybe even dougle digits one day once he gets better at reading pitchers.
