Mariana's Trench of Deep Auction Leagues: how did I do?
Points leagues can be weird as hell. If you even slightly tweak your point-scoring settings, it can turn the entire fantasy ecosystem inside-out, and part of the fun is discovering what alternate bizarro-dimension you've created. So let me describe the particular bizzaro-dimension I've wandered into before sharing my team and my lessons learned.
The Bizarro League
This league is super deep: $300, 20 teams, 30 players per team, 14 slots for hitters and 14 slots for pitchers (the rest are benched). I find this to be freeing, because you can bid on whoever you want and odds are you'll have an available roster slot for them.
Scoring
On the scoring, briefly as I can: a top 35 hitter will produce 300+ points, a top 10 hitter will produce 400+ points, and Pujols will get you 600 points. Strikeouts are worth -1, so they kill your hitters. Because of scoring, a few of the very best leadoff hitters have stupidly high value: Brett Gardner and Juan Pierre are worth 300+ points. Pitching is balanced: a top 30 pitcher will produce 300+ points. This balance is weird in and of itself as it means you should spend on pitching.
On to my team!
C: Carlos Santana $22
1B: Lance Berkman $5
2B: Tsuyoshi Nishioka $8
3B: Edwin Encarnacion $2
SS: J.J. Hardy $4
CI: Mark Trumbo $3
MI: Chris Getz $1
IF: (empty)
LF: Matt Holliday $41
CF: Jacoby Ellsbury $25 (worth it, shut up. I explained this in my "Scoring" paragraph.)
RF: Shin-Soo Choo $34
OF: Jay Bruce $24
OF: Nick Markakis $14
Util: Marlon Byrd $4
BN: Tyler Colvin $7
BN: Chris Coghlan $2
Okay, let me stop there for a moment. Yes, this is a deep league. I said so, didn't I? Since there are 20 teams, $300 each, that's $6000 to spend on a pool of players. Most of that money gets front loaded on top-tier guys like Pujols and Cabrera, who went for high $50s. Lots of guys went for $40+. So I don't feel too bad about getting Matt Holliday for $41.
I could have waited for the overpay bonanza to die down and stocked up on $20 players but you have to be very very careful you don't let all the talent pass you by. Now my pitching.
SP: Dan Haren $17
SP: Francisco Liriano $20
SP: Ted Lilly $11
SP: Hiroki Kuroda $8
SP: Edinson Volquez $8
RP: Jordan Walden $4
RP: (empty)

RP: (empty)
P: Jhoulys Chacin $12
P: Edwin Jackson $7
P: Homer Bailey $1
P: Anibal Sanchez $6
BN: Scott Baker $2
BN: Bud Norris $2
BN: Daisuke Matsuzaka $2
BN: Travis Wood $2
BN: Carlos Carrasco $1
I have nothing against relief pitching, I just didn't feel like paying the $9-15 everyone else was paying for saves. This is a points league anyway and I have no obligation to get saves. It's all about accumulation, hence my 14 starters. Consider it pitcher-streaming from my own bench.
Reflection: My biggest regret is how I systematically overspent on low level SP talent. Anibal Sanchez for $6, Edwin Jackson for $7, Edinson Volquez for $8? That's $21 I could have used to secure a better infield. And there were multiple reasonably good $1 starters remaining in the draft.
Thoughts? Reactions? I spent so much time thinking about it and making my picks, so even the smallest input from you will be tremendously interesting to me. Thanks!

Nice team for such a deep league. That infield could be very problematic though especially if anyone gets injured cough Berkman cough
Markakis was a good deal. You did a good job putting together a cheap pitching staff too. Your top 4 pitchers are very very good and you have 2 aces in Liriano and Haren. Both would be #1s on most teams in a 20 team league. Chacin is a bit pricey but could pay off. I like Baker and Wood for $2 a lot.
Why Chris Getz? I know it’s a deep league but wow.

In a league where Jon Lester went for $40 and Felix Hernandez went for $47, and even Roy Oswalt unexpectedly went for $36, I was so pumped to get Dan Haren for $17. I did not think it would happen. I also had my sights set on Jered Weaver but he ended up going for $26.
And yeah, my infield really does suck. According to my little spreadsheet thingy, Lance Berkman could earn 280 points, but it’s based on a somewhat-rosy projection from Rotochamps.com that assumes he gets 497 at bats and hits 22 home runs.
Obviously I’m hoping Chris Getz can steal some bases for me. If I want to improve on him it will have to be via trades because there is NOTHING on the waiver wire, at least for IFs.
