How Much Is A Fantasy Player Worth?
It seems than more and more often, managers are starting to abandon certain stats in favor of others. Home runs are becoming a rarity while stolen bases seem to be on the rise. This had lead to managers attempting to gain as much power as possible in the early rounds and spending late round picks on players like Cameron Maybin or Emilio Bonifacio to get their stolen bases. How much does having a player who provides no power affect his value? How much does a player with no speed affect you?
While attempting to judge positional scarcity, I started looking at the league average stats of players. There were a few obvious trends that you would expect such as shortstops hitting for less power than other positions or 1st basemen having less speed than outfielders. What I did was calculate the positional average of 6 main categories: Hits, Runs, Home Runs, Runs Batted In, Stolen Bases, Walks. Depending on your league settings, you can modify these categories. Average is tough to quantify and give a set value, so I used hits. It won't always give an accurate representation of player value because it is entirely dependent on plate appearances. However, if a player misses time due a freak injury that you feel has no impact on his future abilities, you can extrapolate his stats out of a full season.
The values are after the jump.
Remember that these formulas have no bearing on the real life value of a player. These values are for the 2011 season, and you will see changes in these values as the positional averages vary from season to season. Fortunately, they shouldn't vary be massive amounts. These formulas are based on every at bat taken by a player at the given position. If you are in a smaller league (10-12 teams), editing the player field to just the top 15 or so players for the infield positions may be more helpful as they are the only ones that would be starting in the league.
There are a few slight issues with the system. One is that catchers, 1st basemen and 3rd basemen would get an insane boost over another for having just one stolen base extra. Since catchers, 1st basemen and 3rd basemen do not steal that many bases as a whole, stolen bases is removed from their equation. Adding an arbitrary number of about +15 would be more accurate.
H = Hits
HR = Home Runs
R = Runs
RBI = Runs Batted In
SB = Stolen Bases
BB = Walks
C = 1.045H + 8.176HR + 2.248R + 2.008RBI+ 2.550BB (+15SB)
1B = 0.9790H + 6.830HR + 2.117R + 1.607RBI + 2.394BB (+15SB)
2B = 0.9909H + 13.149HR + 2.031R + 2.443RBI + 11.8SB + 3.187BB
3B = 0.9909H + 10.181HR + 2.131R + 2.088RBI + 3.076BB (+15SB)
SS = 0.9756H + 15.375HR + 2.066R + 2.574RBI + 9.5SB + 3.363BB
OF = 0.9773H + 8.705HR + 1.911R + 2.156RBI + 8.7SB + 2.784BB
The idea behind this is to accurately judge a player's value based on his position. Yes, Matt Kemp outperformed Troy Tulowitzki by a large margin last season in every category, but was it as much as most of us think?
Troy Tulowitzki = 0.9756(162) + 15.375(30) + 2.066(81) + 2.574(105) + 9.5(9) +3.363(59) = 1340.8302 points
Matt Kemp = 0.9773(195) + 8.705(39) + 1.911(115) + 2.156(126) + 8.7(40) + 2.784(74) = 1575.5055 points
As you can see, finding a high quality shortstop is a lot harder than finding a quality outfielder, so Tulowitzki gets a bonus as the players around him as not as good. These formulas work for all players, and if you want to see how Kinsler stacks up against Longoria, all you have to do is sub in the values for the appropriate position.
I'm sure many people will question this thought process, because it is far from perfect, and I'm not denying that by any means. I'd just like to prove that positional scarcity is real and that it can be quantified, and hopefully this accomplishes that.
Or have I totally lost it?

I've only got classes 3 nights a week
So the other 4 I’m usually out until 3 AM or so. So the nights that I do have class, my sleep schedule is totally out of wack.

the way i see it is:
C, SS, and 2B are the positions with the least elite players.
OF’s are a dime a dozen.
and i’d ake power before speed. because fast players get caught stealing. power guys dont really run

You would think that
But 3B was incredibly weak last season because of all the injuries. It makes Jose Bautista’s season incredibly valuable, even though players like Kemp and Braun might have outperformed him on pure numbers.
If you want to say dumb things, you can't get mad when I call you dumb.
catcher
I think catcher is the deepest its been in years.
Bautista’s 3b eligibility is huge……but I guess he will lose it in 2013 with Lawrie there, right?
I think OF is slightly scarce as well. After the top 20 or so, you can mix and match any of them.

We can find out more once the ZiPS projections come out
At that point, I can reformulate the equations based on the projected positional averages. Catcher seems deep to an extent, but once you get past the top 8-10, it really turns into a platoon type of situation for most teams.
While OF may seem scarce, it’s never really that shallow. A lot of players have outfield eligibility compared to the infield positions. Bat first players get tossed in to the outfield more than any other position.
If you want to say dumb things, you can't get mad when I call you dumb.
but every year their are of's that far exceed expectations.
and they come in bulk and outta nowhere.

really. name 5 elite 2b. 5 elite ss's and 5 elite catchers
while i agee that 3b is scarce. their really arent many 2B’s out their behind cano and pedroia.
and SS their arent many out their. especially with the possible move of hanley to 3rd base if he doesnt force his way out, who is their at SS? reyes, tulo, asdrubal has solidified himself as consistentley great preformer yet. jeter is nearing the end of his run, and whatever power numbers he had are just gone now. their is a lot of good talent at 3b if you include the up and comers.

catcher was a suprisingly solid year.
i mean cano, pedroia,utley. who’s next? espinanso? weaks? uggla? phiillips? zobrist and kendricks i dont think are elite.
the positions are equally weak. but their may is more 3b talent going into next year.
longo, arod, bautista, young, wright, zimmerman, and maybe hanley. thats pretty good imo.
their weak positions. but 3b has the upper hand

Next year? Most likely
But last season, a ton of 3rd basemen missed games which is why they got a huge value boost. Like I said, these values will change once the ZiPS projections come out for this year.

Kinsler, Zobrist, Phillips, Uggla
If you don’t think those guys are top fantasy producers, well, I would like to play in your league.
top 2nd baseman. yea.

To be honest
he has actually improved over the past 5 months or so. I know it’s hard to believe, but a decrease in baiting him coupled with him having to go back to school actually seems to have helped the quality of his posts, or at least decreased the frequency. Yes, he’s still flat-out wrong most of the time, and incapable of maintaining a reasonable discussion/disagreement, but you have to admit that the overall tone of his posts has become somewhat less blatantly disagreeable lately.
But, yeah, arguing that there are no top producers at 2B, then trying to change the terms of the discussion when clearly proven wrong…classic mother…errrr…LT.
/Archer is back in a month
i dont see where i was clearly proven wrong
their are no “elite” 2nd baseman. besides the ones i listed.
not saying any of them arent good. but their not elite. top 25 fantasy guys.
also im not really wrong. ive turned out to be right on most things. they just sound wrong at the current moment.

Where you are wrong
Zobrist, Kinsler, and Phillips ALL outscored every (EVERY SINGLE ONE) third-baseman in my keeper league last year. You simply don’t know what you’re talking about.
by pooptallica on Dec 14, 2011 12:50 PM EST up reply actions
last year yes. but last year was a down year. with many injuries at the position
this year a lot will bounce back from slumps and injuries of last year.
the only elite 2nd baseman, consistentley year after year are cano, pedroia, and utley.
their are 4-5 3rd baseman in the elite catagorie of fantasy baseball players

well no.
Arod i think will have a good year next year now that cano, Tex, and grandy have become the great offensive threats. arod will see more chances to hit.
but
longo, bautista, young, wright, zimmerman are all in position to do better than zobrist, kinsler, and phillips.
and if hanley is moved to 3B, and arod bounces back from the injuries, the 3rd baseman are far better than 2ndbaseman in the mlb.
also i only included utley since a lot of ppl consider him a top talent. i woulda just kept it at cano and pedroia. and if ur okay with that. then that just helps my argument
