Fantasy Baseball Draft: Prepping for my Minor League Draft (who to take?)

So, I have a dilemma right now. I currently own picks 1.01 and 2.10 in my minor league draft and im trying to decide which direction to take as far as players or even moving some key guys. Right now i have a nice solid team that finished 4th out of 14 last season in a 11year and counting dynasty league. There are two pretty monster teams that i still finished 1000 points behind and im still far away i think so im contemplating moving Prince Fielder and Cliff Lee to further bolster my minors and buy time for the corner stones i have to develop.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Lineup:

C: Geovany Soto

1B: Prince fielder

2B: Aaron Hill

3B: Ryan Zimmermann

SS: Stephen Drew

IF: Eric Hosmer

OF: Justin Upton

OF: Matt Kemp

OF: BJ Upton

UTIL: Carlos Beltran

*bench

*Jed Lowrie

*Carlos Ruis

*Gordon Beckham

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Star-divide

My Rotation:

SP: Cliff Lee

SP: Roy Oswalt

SP: Mat Latos

SP: Dan Hudson

SP: Jordan Zimmermann

CL: Huston Street

CL: Chris Perez

*bench

*Max Scherzer

*Chad Billingsley

*Homer Bailey

*Andrew Cashner

*Kyle Farnsworth

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Minors:

Manny Machado

Jameson Taillon

Dayan Viciedo

Ryan Kalsih

Brad Peacock

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Players I am considering at 1.01:

Anthony Rendon (love him, but shoulder?)

Jurickson Profar (love him but only in A ball plus have Manny in system)

Trevor Bauer (absolutely love him)

Gerrit Cole (high upside/high risk)

Yu Darvish (read Cole)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Players I am considering at 2.10:

Gary Brown (love him)

Francisco Lindor (monster tools, can he hit?)

Yasmani Grandal (hate the move to SD)

Bubba Starling (doubt he lasts here but could)

me

I like taking bats in a minor league draft…..like both Profar and Rendon, but would not argue with Darvish. How is he in the minor league draft when he will be in the Rangers rotation this season.
I like Starling or Grandal in the 2nd round.

Where will Bogaerts be selected? I like him with your 2nd pick if he is available.

Darvish...

Ray,

players when posted are added that year to the minor league draft, which is how Darvish and Cespedes will be available this year.

I have the same mind set with you on the bats over arms, if you had to choose out of Rendon or Profar which would you go? Even though i do have Machado on the farm i generally don’t care about positions this early since people can move at any time.

by High Heater on Dec 23, 2011 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

Rendon

Profar is good, but he is so far from the majors that something could easily go array in the next couple of seasons, so I’d go Rendon out of the bats.

by dudedudedude on Dec 23, 2011 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

Profar

I think he will start in High A this year, so he is only 2 years away….maybe 2.5. With that said, Rendon is probably about 1-1.5 years away….assuming good health.

Not as if Rendon is a DH

3rd base or 2nd base is still tough to fill.

assuming good health

that’s a big ass assumption. there are rumblings that there’s some serious issues with that shoulder.

by JoelGuzman'sScout on Dec 24, 2011 3:56 AM EST up reply actions

Wasnt

the rumblings pre-draft and right after? I have read reports he was throwing months ago. It’s a concern but Rendon does have elite OBP, BB/K ability with high average right no. I would think the only thing suspect would be his power with questions on his shoulder but would that be career threatening or something rehab over time would heal?

by High Heater on Dec 24, 2011 5:12 AM EST up reply actions

it's not about throwing

it’s about getting his power back. some think he’ll never be the same hitter again. but those “some” have a tendency to be wrong a heck of a lot.

source?

where did you read/hear about this?

I keep up with KLaw, BA and BP till my subscription ran out (may re-up though for Jason Parks stuff), and have not read that his shoulder was that bad.

Sickels

gave him an A- rank and said he almost gave him an A.

2) Anthony Rendon, 3B, Grade A-: Borderline A. I want to see how his shoulder is, if his power and arm strength come back fully, before giving him the Grade A imprimatur. I still expect him to be an excellent player.

Has John given more details on his shoulder?

I looked

And could not find any reports on the shoulder in that context. I googled a news report in june with Rendon himself saying his shoulder is fully healthy and it (the shoulder) was blown out of proportion during the draft. Now if that’s the truth no one knows however the report did state his throwing was off due to a strained muscle in his shoulder that did not require surgery…. Nothing in the article mentioned his hitting being affected.

by High Heater on Dec 24, 2011 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

from BA
He signed a big league contract worth $7.2 million (including a $6 million bonus) at the Aug. 15 deadline, and sat out games in instructional league while continuing to build strength in his shoulder.

I guess we will find out in February when teams report to spring training and start playing games in March.

Profar and Gary Brown

by BrianCMU. on Dec 23, 2011 7:09 PM EST reply actions

Darvish

The thing with Darvish is im not too fond of the stretch of SPer’s that came over here with hype and flopped… granted i don’t think this will necessarily happen with him but im leaning more towards one of those bats (Profar or Rendon) with the top pick overall since i think they have a safer floor for success.

On Bogaerts i would definitely consider him with the second pick as well for some reason i forgot to add him in that column. I still think Gary Brown and Bubba Starling have a higher ceiling then him though.

Any thoughts on Lindor’s bat? I have read a lot of scouting that is praising him…

by High Heater on Dec 23, 2011 8:21 PM EST reply actions

Bogaerts

I disagree that Brown has a higher ceiing than Bogaerts…..Bogaerts is projected to have 30 HR power and should move to 3b….

I would rank them:

Bogaerts
Starling
Brown

and overall
Rendon
Profar
Bogaerts
Starling
Brown
Lindor

I don’t think Lindor will hit for power….he’s more glove than bat, from what I have read.

by Ray Guilfoyle on Dec 23, 2011 8:40 PM EST up reply actions

Bogaerts

I read his power could reach 30 as he fills out more and moves to 3B, not disagreeing there more splitting hairs. Brown to me just did extremely well at the level he hit and if he progresses any more power he could be a future .300 20/40 OF (BJ Upton with a high average/OBP?) type.

Starling has the best tools of that bunch but for some reason ever since Tate im more leery of HS kids oozing tools with no pro data to go off of.

by High Heater on Dec 23, 2011 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

Brown turned 23

in September and played in High A, while Bogaerts just turned 19 on Oct.1st and should either start in Low A or High A this season…..big difference, in my opinion.

Marc Hulet on Bogaerts

SCOUTING REPORT: Given his young age, Bogaerts’ season was a massive success. He displayed an advanced approach that should lead to him hitting for average down the line and he has good bat speed, which generates above-average power. Defensively he plays a solid shortstop but he’s expected to slow down and shift over to third base before he reaches the Majors. An interesting side note: Bogaerts’ twin Jair Bogaert spent 2011 playing for Boston Dominican Summer League team (He hit .288 in 47 games).

Josh Bell is a very intriguing pick

Profar + Bell

As for Machado and Profar, I’m not 100% convinced Machado won’t get too big for SS. Even if he DOES stay, that’s two legit SS prospects that can help you trade for an area of need in the future.

So players like Jesus Montero, Teheran and Moore went in the major league draft.

Darvish

I love the scouting reports but he does have a point with japanese players. Kuroda does pitch in a much weaker NL then what Dice-K went through in the AL. I’d say Darvish is somewhat in the same situation, even though it’s not the East.

I can’t honestly say I know what to expect from him but I know taking him over even guys like Bauer would be something i might shy away from.

Aaron Cook sucks, therefore, Roy Halladay has a higher probability of failing. Don’t compare players on race or background, compare them on talent and stuff.

Darvish

Yu shall be in the rotation of a very good team in 2012. His strike out and walk rates were very good in japan. Throws lots of innings. At worst, you should get a helpful arm at no budget cost (minor league pick), at best, one of the best.

Darvish should be your pick and it really isn’t all that close of a choice.

by tuna411 on Dec 27, 2011 10:25 AM EST reply actions

True but

You cant use his stats over seas as a match for what he will do here. There’s been plenty of data that suggests his stats will take a hike and i am betting he will walk a lot more batters in the bigs then he did over there.

I’m not denying his talent but to me you have a super prospect in Profar who put up some pretty studly stats in the SAL at 18 who plays a good MI spot thats projected to stay there as well as Rendon who has been the best college bat the past few years, but has some questions about his shoulder… still projects as a quality If bat and elite if healthy… both much younger then Darvish.

I’m not holding out exactly not drafting an arm but i have always been inclined to draft the bats as they are more likely to hit their projected ceilings.

To me if Rendon is healthy hes got a very good chance at being elite… even if he isnt i still see a mighty good prospect there in the bigs. Profar, for someone to do that at that age in the SAL is pretty impressive and he is so advanced with the bat that i am finding it hard to see him not be a really safe bet to do well when he’s up.
