Fake Teams Dynasty League

PrintSomeone (I believe it was Robert) brought up the idea of a fake teams dynasty baseball league. Would anybody be down to do this? I'd be down to do it personally, so long as we get 10+ teams. We'd need to figure out settings and what not but I currently run a 4 sport dynasty league so I'm sure we could figure out some settings that appeal to everyone with regards to stats, host site and salary rules assuming there is any.

I’ve done a deep keeper league for several years, but this would be my first foray into dynasty, with contracts and salaries and such. Would be fascinating. Rec’ing this post for now to keep at the top.

But I’d be open to doing either of the big 3. I’m not too sure how CBS and ESPN work however but I’m sure someone here is familiar with it to be commissioner. I’m assuming we can use a proboards site in the offseason to deal with roster moves. If that’s the case, I could easily set that up as I have with previous leagues. I think the biggest factors will come down to number of teams, league, salary rules, stats, prospect rules and roster positions. Anybody have any ideas for this?

Variety of things
If you want to include pick trades, as well as offseason trades and what not, it helps to have an outside site that everyone can view. Could just run it off google docs as well. Do ESPN and CBS run year round? I know Yahoo! doesn’t so in my league we use a proboards site to keep all transactions listed in the offseason, as well as rookie drafts for the next season.

Don’t think ESPN does, either. Proboards is a nice complement to keep everything organized during the offseason.

I have done regular fantasy baseball leagues before but never a dynasty league. I had a few posts asking about help for starting a dynasty league and most of you recommended that I just join a league. This seams like a great chance for me to get used to the differences and I definitely would like to be an owner.
I'm in, if you'll have me.
Open to whatever settings you guys think are fair. Looking forward to it.

I am down for whatever rules you guys want to have. I am the noob in here so whatever you guys think will work best is fine by me. Looking forward to it.
Roster Positions
From experience, I usually go with 1 catcher, 1 first basemen, 1 2nd basemen, 1 short stop, 1 third basemen, 3 outfielders, 2 utilities, 3 starting pitchers, 2 relief pitcher and 4 pitcher spots.
In my dynasty that I am currently in, we also 10 bench spots and 3 DL spots, mostly because people like to stash youth players so having a deep bench works out well.
Lets gets some discussion on what everyone would like for the roster positions.

Stat categories
Once again, from experience we run a 8×8 league. The categories are as followed:
Batters: Runs, Hits, Home runs, RBI’s, Stolen bases, walks, average and on base percentage.
Some might argue some redundancy with the categories, but it’s tough to find a perfect balance of these categories. Rank wise, it doesn’t tend to skew the players far from the original 5×5 rankings.
Pitchers: Wins, Strikeouts, ERA, WHIP, Saves, Holds, Quality Starts, Complete Games
Let’s hear some discussion on what you think the stat categories should be, whether it be from personal experience of what you would like to try.

would that be better than RBIs? I know lots of people don’t like RBI’s and it depends on your team more than individual performance. Just thinking aloud I still have no preferences.

I’m personally a fan of RBI’s, as I am well aware it’s not necessarily due to team performance, but not many stats are. One of the best aspects of fantasy is that it isn’t real. If it was, we would have WAR as the only category.

like other stats, has its flaws as well.

Minor League System
From experience, we have a prospect system that has worked out fairly well to this point. In January before the season starts, we do a three round prospect league draft. The players that are available to be selected are any players that are signed but have not played a major league game. So players like Harper can be selected, current high school and college players can not be selected.
They do not have to be placed on your major league roster right away as many of the players picked don’t make the majors immediately. We give the rights to the owner that drafted those players for a specific amount of major league experience. We use 250 AB’s for batters or 100 innings for pitchers, which is about half of a full season with some variation. The owner has the right to add and drop these players until they cross these limits at which point they become fair game to everyone. There is no limit to the amount of prospects you may own, but I wouldn’t hold onto 40 because you will need to make room for them on your roster by the time they cross the limit threshold.

I have several questions about this.
1 – After three rounds, any prospect is fair game?
2 – You can own as many prospects as you want?

You can't add prospects unless it via the draft
So mid season, you decide to add Jesus Montero, he isn’t your prospect. He is your player. If you drop him, someone else can pick him up.

So it’s a relatively shallow minor league system. And you can own minor leaguers on your major league team if you want. Right?

That is correct
After a few years, the systems get big enough. We are in year 4 now and some people have systems of 15+ guys because they drafted them fairly young. We could also increase the number of rounds to 5 or more if needed.
You can add prospects to your team yes. For example, I owned Brett Lawrie, I had him on my team since day 1. If I dropped him, no one could touch him because he is still under the AB’s limit.

Everything sounds good to me, I think.
I’m mildly interested in salaries, but not so much that I’d demand it.
I’ve only ever been in one dynasty league before, and we sort of made up a lot of rules without really considering what has worked for people before, so I’m happy to sit back and see how it’s really done.

I think having larger Minor systems kinda adds to the dynasty aspect of it, would people be cool with having say 10 minors ?

Just need to add prospects to it VIA the draft only. If we could add just anyone, the prospect pool would be basically shot by the time we got to drafts.

Oh no I totally agree I just meant larger then a 3 round draft to kick off the dynasty maybe a 10 round minor draft to start the dynasty with subsequent 3 round draft based solely on the players drafter from that years draft class at the end of each season

Pretty simple, just a vote as to which site you would prefer out of the big 3 (CBS, ESPN, Yahoo). Assuming these are the main ones people use that offer free services.

That's the idea
Dynasty doesn’t mean teams, it just means you can keep as many players as you can afford from season to season.
Salaries
Never done a league with salaries so I’m just spitballing here.
Would it be an auction style draft or a standard draft format?
If we did an auction draft, handing out a certain number of contracts by year (5 5 year contracts for example) based on auction value would make sense (at least to me) for the first couple seasons. Free agents would run at the end of the season based on contracts. If Have a set salary cap. You can resign players at an inflated cost. If a player makes it to free agency, highest bidder wins.
Once again, I’m totally new to salaries so this could be absolutely insane.

I’d be willing to help with salaries- basically the players salaries would be based on the round they’re drafted in, so like round 1 would be a ($15/1year) contract. and round 2 would be like ($12/2y) and etc, Requires you to think about the players you draft in what round relative to their age and production levels. Obviously we would have a cap at 120- or so depending on the amount of rounds we do.

Maybe we should start with a bit of organizational hierarchy
I feel like if we just have everyone throwing ideas around in this thread, we might never actually get anything set in stone. Perhaps we can elect/appoint/whatever a commissioner (or a committee of a few) who can put at least some basic rules in place, keep track of interested owners, waitlist the latecomers, and do some research as to salary and contract structures that work well, then come back with some options for owners to vote on to finalize the details.

Not actually set up for fantasy
Everything done on the proboards is text based. It’s just a place where we can keep track of everything that happens with the league. We will have an actual league set up on ESPN or CBS or Yahoo to keep track of the details.
Basically what the proboards is good for is making sure prospect drafts, salaries and everything is accurate by keeping records of what has happened.

That is correct
So after year one, we keep track of all the rosters on the proboards site until the next season starts. Once the next season starts, we start up the host site again and enter in the teams and it runs like that over and over.

Was thinking H2H
Guess I should have stated the basics earlier. Could be Roto if people would prefer that. My main concern with Roto is that people lost interest early which really doesn’t help out with the league in the long run. Just an observation.

in keeper leagues, those not in the running, could trade for the future.
This is not meant to move away from H2H, just what I have observed in the past.

It’s not to say you couldn’t trade for the future in H2H either. It’s hard to get a long lasting group of guys for dynasty leagues and a manager basically wasting a season can disappear pretty quickly. H2H at least keeps the rivalries and smack talk up.

I feel like roto is better for baseball simply because you build a team based on the entire season and week to week scoring can be extremely random. If everyone is going to commit to it roto is better but that’s not exactly predictable so I can see why you would want h2h

I feel like it more closely reflects players’ true values. If you had Dan Uggla in a head-to-head league last year, you might have fallen too far behind early on for his 2nd half surge to have been of any help, for example.

But Atlanta was faced with the same issues we would have had with Uggla. Running Uggla out there in every head to head matchup represents the same small sample size we are faced with.

Just for reference, I’m interested in salaries/contracts, but it’s not a dealbreaker. I’m ok with the 8×8 categories mentioned above, and the position settings seem good. I also like the deep bench. I would, however, prefer a larger prospect draft, at least for the first year.

Few things to remember
If we do a salary system, prospects will have to count against the salaries which means that people won’t be able to afford massive drafts. Secondly, eventually, people will run out of room on there rosters for keeping this prospects.

Pretty basic but we can keep most of our information stored on the site during the offseason. Just a hypothetical page idea and can be changed rather easily. Certain sections can be designated for certain things as evident with this example.

I’m very interested, the more teams the merrier I say w/ regards to dynasty/keeper leagues. I’m a very active owner and have 5+ years experience playing keeper/dynasty leagues.

I have a pretty solid basis of knowledge of prospects and organizations. Been playing in a very competitive 20 team keeper league for the past 6 years and looking for another league to play in.

Most likely before it is all finished
Seeing as there is 16 teams with 28 man rosters, it will most likely take a while to finish since we are doing an offline draft. If it was a live draft, we could do it after free agency but getting 16 people across time zones, school schedules and work schedules to meet up a one time is just unfeasible.
