Fantasy Baseball 2012: Early Second Base Rankings
Below are my early Second Base rankings for the 2012 season. You can also find links to our previous positional breakdowns below.

First Base - Initial, In-Depth with Profiles
Second Base has a bit more depth than I initially thought when I started working on my rankings. Depending on what your team will need from 2B, the players between 13 and 18 could all be changed up without much complaint.
I have included players who qualify on a 5 start limit (Yahoo standard), but mentioned if they fall under the 20 game limit which most of the other websites run with.
Here's my early Second Base Rankings for 2012:
1. Robinson Cano (NYY)
2. Ian Kinsler (TEX)
3. Dustin Pedroia (BOS)
4. Dan Uggla (ATL)
5. Chase Utley (PHI)
6. Brandon Phillips (CIN)
7. Rickie Weeks (MIL)
8. Ben Zobrist (TAM)
9. Howie Kendrick (LAA)
10. Michael Young (TEX) - [14 starts at 2B this season]
11. Dustin Ackley (SEA)
12. Aaron Hill (FA)
13. Jason Kipnis (CLE)
14. Jemile Weeks (OAK)
15. Danny Espinosa (WAS)
16. Kelly Johnson (FA)
17. Allen Craig (STL) - [8 starts at 2B this season]
18. Ryan Roberts (ARI)
19. Neil Walker (PIT)
20. Brian Roberts (BAL)
HM: Omar Infante, Darwin Barney, Ryan Raburn, Gordon Beckham, Scott Sizemore, Daniel Murphy

nice work here
Second base is deeper than first base.
I think I would have Young a bit higher and Kipnis and Espinosa above Ackley and Hill. Although if Hill stays in ARI, he could be solid in 2012.
How did Kendrick manage 18 HRs with a fly ball rate of 26.5%? Is the power real or was the HR/FB% a fluke? If it is real, and he can start hitting more fly balls….he can move up in 2012, I think.

Gotta think
Cuddyer with his 17 starts at 2b should be on this list somewhere, especially if the Phillies rumors are as prevalent as we think they are….last year, his counting stats on a very bad offensive team were:
.284
20 HR
71 RBI
11 SB
That isn’t a Top 20 2b? That looks like 95% of Brandon Phillips production
Oops
Not sure how, but I didn’t catch that Cuddyer had 17 games as a part of my research. I will take another look at it tonight, but off the top of my head I would probably want him somewhere around 10-11, with the potential to be a bit higher.

What do you think about Eric Young Jr? Mark Ellis is getting any younger, and the Rockies don’t have any solid 2B prospects, so I’d imagine that EYJ gets considerable amount of time there.
Alex Bunbury = good. Teal Bunbury = a colour
for me
I think the Rockies have seen enough of him. If he hasn’t won the starting job at this point, he is nothing more than a bench guy who will see time at 2b and OF.

I think if they thought he had any shot of getting the job, they would have played him more at 2B in AAA last year. He only played 18 games there, but was in 45 games in the outfield.
To me, he will probably get a shot, but I could see him being traded during Spring Training if he doesn’t earn the job. Realistically, Jonathan Herrera and Chris Nelson are both floating around as well, even if they don’t re-sign Ellis.
