Fake Teams Dynasty League Draft Results: Round 4
The Fake Teams Dynasty League is really moving along now and today I bring you the results from Round 4 of the MLB draft. I selected Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira and although I am happy to have him, I probably would have picked someone else had I known he was still available. More on that in my Round 4 analysis, so let's take a look at Round 4:
Round 4 - $9 - 4 Years
Toronto Blue Jays - Josh Hamilton - OF - Texas Rangers
Los Angeles Dodgers - Cole Hamels - SP - Philadelphia Phillies
Bronx Bombers - Freddie Freeman - 1B - Atlanta Braves
Texas Rangers - Jon Lester - SP - Boston Red Sox
New York Mets - Alex Gordon - OF - Kansas City Royals
Boston Red Sox - Madison Bumgarner - SP - San Francisco Giants
Fake Teams - Mark Teixeira - 1B - New York Yankees
Miami Marlins - Craig Kimbrel - RP - Atlanta Braves
Atlanta Braves - Brandon Beachy -SP- Atlanta Braves
Carl Winslows - Dustin Ackley - 2B - Seattle Mariners
Tampa Bay Rays - CC Sabathia - SP - New York Yankees
Anaheim Angels - Jermey Hellickson - SP - Tampa Bay Rays
Brooklyn Nets - Ike Davis - 1B - New York Mets
Arizona Diamondbacks - Matt Holliday - OF - St. Louis Cardinals
Colorado Rockies - Ian Kennedy - SP - Arizona Diamondbacks
Oakland Athletics - Brian McCann - C - Atlanta Braves
My Round 4 analysis after the jump:
In this round, owners can keep the players drafted for 4 years at $9, so that, like the 3rd round, might have impacted the decision making in this round. But not mine. I saw Mark "text message" Teixeira on the board, and grabbed him. But, if I had done my homework, I probably would have drafted Yankees ace CC Sabathia. At this point in the draft, I have no pitchers on my roster, and all the ace starters are off the board.....I think.
Like I said, plenty of young guys were drafted in this round, including Freddie Freeman, Madison Bumgarner, Brandon Beachy, Dustin Ackley, Jeremy Hellickson, and Ike Davis. I have to say I am surprised that Beachy and Kimbrel were both drafted in this round, far too early for me, as I think there are better starters available.
I am not a fan of Dustin Ackley so I did not like Winslow's pick here. I just think he will be a solid fantasy second baseman, but nothing special. The A's picked Brian McCann with the last pick of the 4th round, and I had given him some thought as well, but catcher seems to be pretty deep now, so I decided to wait.
The Mets selected Alex Gordon here, and I like the move. I think he can come close to his breakout 2011 season in 2012. Good story and shows sometimes you can't give up on your prospects.

Tex/CC
I was pretty shocked to see these guys still on the board and had to debate myself on Bumgarner vs. CC for a few hours before I made my pick. I certainly would have done something different than Prince Fielder in round 1 if I knew Tex would still be available in round 4.

McCann
The part that is crazy to me, because it seems like he’s a lot older, is that he is just going to be 28 years old next season. When I first started looking at him, I thought he was already in his 30s.

great point
he’s in the early to mid part of his peak years……I like him and wish he was available later.

Gordon
It was hard for me to ignore his top prospect history. That is what makes me think there is no way his breakout was a fluke, and that he finally figured it all out. Plus, that Royals lineup could be pretty fierce for the next decade.
ok so you're the Mets?
I need to keep track….I like Gordon…..he may not hit .300 again in ’12, but I can see the power and steals being flat to slightly up.

But I would expect some regression next year. His peripherals don’t support his ERA. But he is young enough to learn and improve. I see him as a future #1/#2. Not sure if it was the best value pick, you might have been able to get him later, but youth is at a big premium in this draft, so if you like the guy, you have to go for him.
When I picked Kimbrel I certainly thought of the whole 4 year concept, a player that could potentially play four years of solid ball. Hopefully my extra thinking pays off.
Alex Bunbury = good. Teal Bunbury = a colour
Closers are so volatile
I always would hesitate to think one would be consistent, or even keep his job, over a 4-year contract. Kimbrel seems like an exception.
