Here we go
Third year of a keeper league in which I have finished first last year and second the year before. My keepers were Brady, Peterson, A. Johnson, Welker. PPR league so receivers are valuable.
I added Maroney and Celek as my 2nd RB and TE. I am looking who to play as my flex player. Here are my options.
Devin Aromashadu
Michael Bush (injured)
Demaryius Thomas
Julian Edelman
Arrelious Benn
I also have Gerhart/Young as insurance in case Peterson goes down.
A few questions: Who should I start as flex in week 1? Who could I target as a backup RB (and in exchange for whom) or am I set when Bush comes back?
This is a 14 team league so the FA picking is slim.
Patrick Crayton, Rock Cartwright, Josh Morgan are top FAs.
Thanks for your input.
Me being a homer here, but I like Aromashadu in the first week. The Bears are playing against the Lions, and I think his upside is higher than the rest of the players based on current depth charts.
Out of that group of free agents you mentioned, I probably like Crayton best because of him being traded to San Diego, but I’m not sure I’d drop Bush to pick him up.

FLex/backup RB
I like Romashadu as your flex for week 1. Chicago’s at home, taking on Detroit. Cutler and Martz will probably want to come out flying. With what’s available, I like your backup WR.
It seems the FA list is really slim. I would stick with Bush. He might still play in Week 1. I think he’ll even have a better season than Maroney.
Which of these pitchers
do you like the most as a keeper? What about performance in the following season?
Bumgarner
Daniel Hudson
Jhoulys Chacin
Brandon Morrow
Brian Matusz
me
Morrow
Chacin
Hudson
Bumgarner
Matusz
There is not much difference between these guys though. I think Chacin could be the best of them all.

Matusz
I’ve prided myself on being an expert of drafting pitching (and admittedly, not as much so on hitting). In an AL-Only league, I fielded Fransisco Liriano, Gavin Floyd, Brett Anderson, and nabbed Colby Lewis very early. The one I really missed on this year was Matusz.
Just a note here though: As HORRENDOUS as he was early on, and I can’t emphasize what a destroyer of ERA worlds he was, here’s a stat: 4.12 ERA and 1.28 WHIP since June 1st. If he can put together another solid month, his ERA probably ends around 4.50 for the year, and you’ve got a beneath the numbers sleeper for 2011.

Hudson
Morrow
Matusz
Chacin
Bumgarner
Bumgarner’s arm issues this Spring scare me a little. Otherwise I would probably switch him with Matusz. This is a nice list of pitchers but I don’t think any are worth betting the farm on. They could continue to do fairly well but it’s hard get a real read on them. The top three could be flipped around and interchanged depending on a number of factors. Morrow probably has the best upside but possibly also the best chance of falling flat. Safety-wise, I would choose Matusz. Hudson will have a difficult time getting wins, as will Matusz. But Hudson has been maybe the best pitcher in baseball stat wise (minus wins) since August 1st. He’s really on a nice roll right now. Chacin has gotten the benefit of a lot of unearned runs. Otherwise his stats wouldn’t look that great- plus the control issues have been there this year but he doesn’t have a history of it. If he gets a handle on his bb’s he could shoot toward the top of the list.
Next year's Jose Bautista?
Jose had a Bautista-like season going in 2009 until September hit when he launched 8 homers. The main difference between September and the prior months of the ‘09 season were that Jose finally got some regular playing time, nearly 100 at bats. And he rewarded Toronto by establishing a career high for homers in a month and tying his career high for any month with 18 rbi’s. Bautista had flashes of stepping up a level or two in the past but I don’t think anyone envisioned a season like this year. And he’s even 3rd base eligible in most leagues.
Who will be next year’s Jose Bautista?
Tough Question
Man I wish I could predict that. I’d say that something to watch for would have to be HR/FB% rate or HR/AB rate for players who are now getting regular playing time.
Keeper Q - Revisited
I asked this question last time there was an open thread and I’d like to revisit your thoughts on the same team since I made some trades. 14 team, 5×5 roto keeper league (must keep 5 players, any combo between hitters and pitchers, cost depends on Y! Overall Rank i.e. 1-14, 1st round pick, 15-28, 2nd round pick, etc.). 2C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, MI, CI, OF x 5, Util, P x 9, Bench x5. I will have the 3rd overall pick since I am in virtually locked into 12th place. Who would you keep for next year?
McCann
Posey (C, 1B)
Pablo Sandoval (1B, 3B)
Andrus
Pedro Alvarez
Kemp
Domonic Brown
Jay Bruce
Freddie Freeman
Kendry Morales
Brett Anderson
Bumgarner
Greinke
Liriano
Mike Minor
Thanks!
For me, it’s probably Posey, Kemp, Bruce, Morales, and maybe Liriano. But a lot of those players are really going to be in for a huge jump in ranking for next season for Yahoo I would think.
5 keeps
I keep Liriano, McCann, Morales, Kemp and Posey

Even guys like Brown, Anderson, Bumgarner, Kung Fu, Lind, Morales & Andrus? Can’t imagine why they’d get a rank boost if they’re under-performing relative to their O-Rank due to a variety of reasons (injury, slumping, late callup, etc.). They look more like sleepers or buy low guys that have a great chance to rebound.
Khalil Green
Anyone know what hes doing and what are his chances of playing next year?
Honestly, I’ve got nothing since his contract was voided by the Rangers. Hopefully he’ll be able to make it back someday.
+1
I’ve read nothing on him

alright
I know it’s hard to do keepers right now but i’m out of it and the trading deadline passed. It’s a 14 team mixed. We need to keep at least three pitchers. Out of this group I need three:
Brett Anderson
Brandon Morrow
Anibal Sanchez
Brett Cecil
Jordan Zimmermann
Now the hitters. I know I’m keeping these players: Tabata, Starlin Castro, B.J. Upton, Adam Dunn, that leaves me with three open spots . so I need three out of this group:
Miguel Montero
Geovany Soto
Aaron Hill (i’ve stuck with him a long time)
Casey McGehee
Jesus Montero
I’m not thrilled with the idea of keeping two catchers, but I can always deal one of them. Plus, Soto is pretty good. I’m just not sure what to make of Aaron Hill. I want to keep him. He’s having another huge day today. Oh, and I don’t need to keep 7 hitters I just need at least 3 pitchers out of 10 keepers. thanks.
me
I would keep Zimmerman, Anderson and Cecil, and M. Montero, McGehee and J. Montero. Hill’s BA is a killer, although the power is nice. I see Jesus Montero getting a full time job in 2011, although, it could be with another team than the Yankees.
Soto seems to be very injury prone, and Miguel Montero is one of the better hitting catchers when he is healthy.

Morrow
both of you guys don’t like Morrow? Do you think he’ll never be an ace or that he might get injured? Because he has been pretty damn dominant. I had going for that 17 strikeout game and he single handedly won me that week. But he is inconsistent and I do like Cecil and Zimmermann. I’ll think about it
I own Morrow in a keeper league, and LOVE his upside. I think that if he can cut down on the walks just a little, he could very easily be a 11-12 K/9 type pitcher. The Blue Jays seem to be very good at identifying and developing pitchers, and that can only help him. The injury concerns are there still, but I think that he could be a top 15 starter by the end of next season.
2011 MLB Starting Roster
Who are 3-5 players in the minors right now who you think will be on their teams starting rosters in 2011?
Well, I’ll include just called up since most of them aren’t getting a lot of playing time:
Yonder Alonso – I think they find somewhere for him to play (probably corner outfield) since Joey Votto has cemented himself quite well at 1B.
Desmond Jennings – I don’t think the Rays resign Crawford, although they’ll try. Jennings is a capable replacement to be sure.
Freddie Freeman – Braves 1B of the future who should get every shot to be the starter in Spring Training
Mike Moustakas – I think he’s going to force his way up with the power he’s shown. I’d be shocked if he wasn’t up to start 2011.
Michael Pineda – I think he’s very likely to be up for the start of the season after blowing away everybody in AA and AAA.
add in
Brandon Belt in SF
Danny Espinosa in WAS-second base…already has 3 HRs and 10 RBIs in his first 3-4 games with WAS this season
Zach Cox in STL-KLaw thinks he could be up in 2011 even though he was just drafted
Jesus Montero-possilble DH in NYY or elsewhere?
Brandon Allen in ARIZ-in left field or first base

Thanks and One more question
I have to cut one of the following players from my team and wanted to know which ones are going to contribute at the major league level in 2011: Brandon Belt, Trayvon, Robinson, Brett Jackson, Brett Lawrie or Devin Mesoraco. Thanks Again!
I think Mesoraco, Belt and Lawrie are reasonably likely to be in the Majors in 2011, and it comes down to Robinson and Jackson for me. Honestly, I’d probably keep Jackson because he seems a lot more likely to have a spot to play sooner than Robinson. Nice problem to have here I’d say.
agreed
But i will say as a Dodgers fan that LAD has an opening in LF with Manny leaving. ESPN’s Tony Jackson has speculated that Colletti would look to re-sign Scott Posednik this offseason. But he also stated that after a recent trip to AA Chatanooga, Colletti was raving about Trayvon Robinson. Finally, Keith Law recently tweeted that Trayvon would be in his top 100 this season and said the power will come. He has shpwn that his numbers in high A last season were no fluke.
With that said, i like Mesoraco, Belt and Lawrie, but wonder where Lawrie will play in 2011. Could the Brewers move Weeks to CF and play Lawrie at 2b?

"Wait ur a girl?" -YanksVikes ignorance about The Melkman
Alvarez and Nunez
What kind of year do you see Alvarez having next year? He’s striking out a ton… does Mike Stanton have a better year than him?
Is Leo Nunez worth a keep? Do you think he’ll be closing out games next year? My league is always starved for closers and I have him cheap.
I’d compare Nunez to what the other closers are kept for, but in a vacuum and knowing he’s cheap, probably.
I think Stanton has the better season next year, but I think Alvarez catches up to him before too long. Alvarez isn’t going to give as much power in my opinion, but is more likely to have a higher batting average and be the more well rounded player.
+1
Stanton could hit 30+ HRs next year. i am not sure Alvarez will approach that yet. In due time though, he will be a 30 HR hitter.

One more
Also… with these Colby Rasmus rumors- if he is indeed traded, what do you see the Cards getting out of him?
CR
On the high side, Colby has progressed nicely in year 2 of facing MLB pitching. He has handled LHP much better than in the past and pretty much equaled last years stats in 100 fewer at bats. He also did not get off to the anticipated slow start that has haunted him throughout his career. He’s a left handed hitter who can be penciled in the #5 spot on down against LHP or RHP without much issue. The biggest asset CR has as of now is that he is cheap and will remain so for a while.
On the negative side, Colby still has holes in his swing that makes him susceptible to quality LHP. He has a high and inside weakness very similar to Rick Ankiel’s. Colby has a ways to go before he could regularly be penciled into the #1-4 holes against LHP but could probably fit the bill against RHP in the #2 or 3 holes. He has speed and runs the bases ok. He stole bases in the minors pretty well- nothing spectacular. At the MLB level he has had much less success. His defense is about average for a center fielder but his accuracy throwing is well below average. His arm strength seems average at best. He’ll never win a GG but is a serviceable CF as of now. Colby is also not the most eloquent of speakers- he even comes off as a hick. But I’m not sure how much of that translates to actual intelligence.
On the high side he has a value similar to a healthy Jacob Elsberry, Adam Jones, possibly Andrew McCutchen with the trade off of less defense and speed for more power. I would not be surprised to see Colby traded for a very highly rated pitching prospect or a highly rated middle infielder or 3b which are the Cards’ needs as of now. He has 35 double/35 homer potential and his progress this season verses last put his value pretty high.

Rasmus
if TLR returns next season, it would be a mistake in my eyes. You don’t deal a solid hitter like Rasmus because the mgr doesn’t like him. I think TLR leaves after this season.

week 1 football sit/start question
In my keeper league I’m strong at RB but not so much at WR. Im just wondering who you guys like best to start for my #2 WR position. Here’s the options: Steve Breaston @ STL. Dexter McCluster against SD. Aromashodu or Devin Hester against DET. Thanks
by AlohaHalofan on Sep 7, 2010 11:28 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
AlohaHalofan
I would take a different approach.
I see Hester and Aromashodu as the ones to start but give the edge to Hester versus Detroit. I can see him scoring on a reverse or return.
My rankings would be: Hester, Aromashodu, Breaston, McCluster
Breaston is more of a question mark with the Arizona offense in flux and McCluster is being raved about but I think I’d go with the safe bet in week one.
Thanks guys
I was leaning more towards one of the Bears receivers especially against DET. I just keep hearing the rumor Cutler likes Aromashodu better and he’s getting tons of hype. The same with McCluster, I just don’t see how this guy is gonna have the kind of impact people are hyping him up to be with all the other talented weapons KC has now. He’s like the 4th option behind Charles, Bowe and Jones. Not to mention having an experienced vet like Chris Chambers. I certainly hope he becomes a serious threat but I really don’t expect much out of him.
In a 14 team PPR league I really need one these guys to step up big time considering Malcolm Floyd is my #1 option right now. I do have Peyton Manning, Jamaal Charles, Adrian Peterson and can start my 2 stud TE’s in Jason Witten and Antonio Gates due to the TE flex option. If Floyd busts out with V-Jacks out for a while and one of these WR’s break out…. I’m thinking championship in my 2nd year in this keeper!
