Dynasty League Trade: Wieters & Myers
20 team H2H points dynasty league that favors pitching.
I have been offered Matt Wieters and David Huff for Brett Myers. I think this is a no brainer, atleast before this season it was, but am looking for other opinions. Myers has scored 336 points on the year, 25th ranked pitcher, compared to Wieters 136 and the top scoring hitter, Miguel Carbrera is at 409 while Halladay is at 537, so you can see that pitching is heavily favored.
My catcher is Ianetta and I just drafted Yasmani Grandal in our entry draft, so I have a need.
My pitching staff: Ubaldo, Myers, Wells, Morrow, Hunter, Duensing, Holland, Tillman, Hochevar, we start 5 SP. I also have a bunch of prospect pitchers, Matzek, Lyles, Vizcaino, Parker, Colome, Reckling, Knapp, Font, Stewart.
My team is in a semi rebuilding mode, I'm 9-8 but can't really compete with the top teams, I have sold off older vets like Cuddyer and McGahee and brought back Holland, Beckham, Sano, so my question is do I add Wieters to my next buy low addition, or is he the next Alex Gordon. Can Brett Myers keep up this kind of production, he is only 30 and could put together seasons that outpace Wieters easily the next couple years?

Myers
At this point I would have to think Myers heads into next season as the Astro’s #1 guy in the rotation. That means he’ll have a good number of starts against #1 and #2 rotation guys. And pitching for a team with a poor offense …that’s a bad combo. I would try to run some stats and try to investigate a few things-
some Myers’ numbers that look a bit shady-
an unusually low number of homers given up overall and esp. at home
a high number of unearned runs
the above numbers could be calculated on a per 9 innings and I would expect them to be career numbers
I like to see runs given up overall as opposed to earned runs because, for me, I just think it is a more fair stat and easier to read across MLB when comparing stats
Myers also has given up fewer hits than innings pitched which is usually a really good sign except that it is weighed against the high number of unearned runs (should have been hits but were errors).
The wins will be difficult for Myers to get in 2011 if he is still with Houston. And their bullpen needs evaluated somewhat. Maybe they are decent and bailing out Myers some but I would suspect with the hits being less than one per inning that the strand rate is MLB average or close.
And let’s face it- Myers gets slap happy with another girlfriend and he’s out of baseball. I would suspect his temperature boils higher than normal anyway throwing for one of the worst teams in baseball.
I would go with Wieters and see what happens. Between Myers and Weiters you have to roll the dice and for me it would be Wieters. I mean Wieters is nothing special hitting wise thus far but that could change. I don’t think in the big picture of things he regressed much since last year. And if he finishes strong he could be a top 10 catcher in 2011.
Yeah ....
To me all of that is more or less meaningless. There’s no question. Some of the luster has rubbed off Wieters, but he’s still an excellent young player and Myers is old and getting old. Trade. Like, now.
