Fantasy Baseball: Midseason Outfielder Rankings

Whew.

For those of you who have never done rankings, let me just tell you: It's much harder than it looks. For the outfielders we ranked our personal top 50. As always I'll remind you that these rankings are strictly our predictions for performance from this point on in the season.

I find that rankings are particularly helpful for figuring out waiver wire options, as well as looking at possible trades you might not have thought of otherwise. Because this pool is so large, even more of those observations are available to you, I encourage you to look over the chart and see how individuals ranked players in addition to our group average.

Because we ranked 50, the chart is quite large and I decided it would be too much to put on the front page--you will find it right after the jump

In terms of players we disagreed on, I would suggest not reading too much into the injured players: Shin-Soo Choo and Manny Ramirez. Clearly our personal rankings reflect a difference in when we think those players will return to action.

But there were some other players that we were fairly polarized on. A quick overview of ones that I noticed included: Ichiro Suzuki, Chris B. Young, Jason Heyward, Colby Rasmus, Magglio Ordonez, Jay Bruce, Alfonso Soriano, Brennan Boesch and Aubrey Huff.

I think your rankings would be easier to understand if you based them on a particular scoring format. I think there’s little doubt that rankings would be quite different based on a 4×4 roto, 5×5 roto or points/categories head to head scoring format. Some formats are homercentric while other formats really weigh steals heavily. It would even if you guys had a single format that you based all your ratings on. But just stating that outfielder A is better than outfielder B based on some unknown ranking system is really not that helpful.

Don’t get me wrong, I like reading the rankings. But there needs to be a scoring format these rankings are based on.

same here

5×5 roto.
question-as i haven’t played a head to head league….what would be the difference in the rankings for any of the leagues? I know 4×4 vs 5×5 is runs scored….but runs are tough to predict.

H2H

The only thing that really changes for me in a H2H roto league is that I weigh consistency more. Players who are streaky can kill you from week to week in a H2H roto league.

For points, you take ratios out of the equation (AVG, OBP, WHIP, ERA) so players who generally kill in those categories but do well in the rest will end up higher. At least that’s been what I’ve noticed so far.

H2H points vs H2H categories

I think there is little difference between H2H categories vs 5×5 roto…only difference is consistency or a guy like Dan Haren might be less effective because of the playoffs.

H2H points is certainly entirely different (and I firmly believe it’s a stupid format).

I would base our rankings on a 5×5 roto format.

Correct

I knew at some point I’d make a math error. My bad.

8th Ray??

You would really take Upton over Crawford for the rest of the year?

yes

I think Upton will turn it on in the 2nd half….and Crawford fell off last year in the 2nd half if I recall correctly.

seriously?

I just don’t see that happening, but you never know. What we need to to have posters make a few fearless 2nd half predictions so we can pin them in a post somewhere. That way we can check back later. Upton having a better 2nd half than Crawford would be a pretty gutsy prediction. IF they both stay healthy I would guess Crawford keeps on keeping on while Upton tries to put together his normal one month fling, then turn back into Mr. Potential.

Let’s start a fearless 2nd half prediction thread tonight- let’s all contribute. Raygu yours would be a good one to kick things off with.
