Three Catcher Conundrum...
14 team 5x5 roto keeper league. It's a two catcher league and I had McCann as a keeper and drafted Posey late but about a couple weeks back when Posada got injured, I then picked up Cervelli. I thought that I'd be using Cervelli until Posey came around the same time Posada came back from the DL but now it sounds like Cervelli will still catch and Posada will DH. What should I do with my three catchers? All three are keeper worthy, Posey with monster upside, Cervelli playing in that potent lineup and McCann being very stable as a C1. Should keep playing all three (one in the DH slot) or trade one to boost my lineup? I am currently in 12th place, 1st in Runs, T-10th in HR, 14th in RBI, 5th in SB, 13th in Avg, T-7th in Wins, 8th in Saves, 8th in K's, 12th in ERA, 8th in WHIP. Here's my team:
| C | Francisco Cervelli (NYY - C) |
| C | Brian McCann (Atl - C) |
| 1B | Mark Reynolds (Ari - 1B,3B) |
| 2B | Brandon Phillips (Cin - 2B) |
| 3B | Pablo Sandoval (SF - 1B,3B) |
| SS | Elvis Andrus (Tex - SS) |
| CI | Neil Walker (Pit - 3B) |
| MI | Erick Aybar (LAA - SS) |
| OF | Jay Bruce (Cin - OF) |
| OF | Ryan Ludwick (StL - OF) |
| OF | Adam Lind (Tor - OF) |
| OF | Cameron Maybin (Fla - OF) |
| OF | Andrés Torres (SF - OF) |
| Util | Mike Aviles (KC - 2B,SS) |
| P | Ryan Franklin (StL - P) |
| P | Tyler Clippard (Was - P) |
| P | Clay Hensley (Fla - P) |
| P | Zack Greinke (KC - P) |
| P | Brett Anderson (Oak - P) |
| P | Clayton Richard (SD - P) |
| P | Evan Meek (Pit - P) |
| BN | Buster Posey (SF - C,1B) |
| BN | Will Venable (SD - OF) |
| DL | Kyle Blanks (SD - OF)DL |
| BN | Dan Haren (Ari - P) |
| BN | Francisco Liriano (Min - P) |
| BN | Wade Davis (TB - P) |

Let me know what you think. Thanks guys!

your team has alot of players who are underperforming expectations this season. I would replace Posey with Cervelli, and see what you can get for Cervelli

Francisco Cervelli
I would def move Cervelli and maybe package him with a pitcher for a bat. I don’t think his value is going to get any higher, especially with the news that Posada is going to DH. Cervelli has not had much pop above A ball. He may benefit by being in the Yankees lineup, but I don’t see a lot of upside looking at his stats. He’s not played much the last two years either, so I’d see if he has an injury bog following him around.
get rid of Cervelli
I agree with Ray’s brief comment but will expand upon it and add in some of my own comments/suggestions. Posey is definitely better than Cervelli. Cervelli may be a Yankee but not a good one. He generally only benefits when the team is already doing really well (like 7+ runs). He never scores any runs, only scattered RBIs, no SLUG%, and (most importantly very little upside). What he is doing now is at best, the best output you will get from him. But the most important thing about him is that Posada is only their DH temporarily. The Yanks plan on using the DH as more of a place for guys that need a rest day. Posada is doing catching drills again (meaning his knee is getting better) and will resume catching sometime, and Cervelli is not good enough to DH. Cervelli is not a keeper.
Posey will get more playing time in the upcoming weeks, compared to Cervelli. Bengie Molina is currently listed as the starting C for SF but I can not imagine that will be for long. Molina is in a 2-45 hit streak and is just overall bad. Posey is red hot in all of the games he has started in (and he has been starting more and more games recently). The only thing Cervelli may have is a .280 AVG and Posey should do that or better + everything else.
For the rest of your team, I do not know what is available on the FA market but:
Your pitching actually seems pretty good despite the numbers. You have some good average pitchers living it up in the West divisions, good closer, and good setup and middle relief with good WHIP + K:BB + K/9. Then your “Aces” like Greinke and Haren are currently under performing and will likely correct themselves as the season progresses (things like ERA and WHIP).
Your Offense in my opinion is actually were you are worst off.
In the OF, I would consider dropping players Maybin and Venable. Maybin’s playing time is going to be pretty limited soon with the call up of Mike Stanton. And Stanton is a player you should try and acquire for one of those players. He has very good natural power and is being compared to Miguel Cabera (who went .270AVG 12HR 62RBI in only 87 games, and doing this all while being only 20yrs old). Venable then is just not doing anything. He gets R and random SB (that he has not ever shown in his career), which you have plenty of from other players like Phillips and Andrus.
Your other chance for improvement lies in your MI, with Aybar and Aviles. Aybar is at risk of losing his everyday spot and will become day-to-day in his playing. Aviles is just bad all around, he is in their lineup for his glove, not his bat. He also just recently got demoted in the lineup giving him less AB giving all of his numbers a much less chance of improving upon what they are now. Both players mostly just give you R, which once again you get from everyone else, and offer little to no upside.
I would suggest to look up someone to fill in your MI spot, there probably is more available 2B than SS out there. Out of the 2 players, if you can not replace them both, you would keep Aybar. But to put things in perspective, on ESPN player rater, the Phillies Wilson Valdez is ranked higher, and as an avid Phils fan Valdez sucks hard. You probably do not even know who he is, all you have to know is whenever the Phils have men on base and Valdez is up, 90% he grounds into a double play.
Once again I have no idea who is available on the FA market, but if you gave me a list I would easily be able to steer you towards someone to help you out in either AVG, HR, or RBI. I do not think any of your players are really trade worthy but you could possibly give away one of your average Pitchers (like Anderson or Richard) and get some talented offensive player to replace the people I suggested.
Thanks...
I appreciate everyone’s input. I was not sure what to do with my team but with my team hovering over last place, I’m willing to try just about anything at this point. I should have sold Anderson when I had the chance but he’s now on the DL so now I only have Liriano as my best pitcher. I tried a Liriano for Ethier deal but it was turned down. Not sure what else I can do since even my best players aren’t doing like that should and it seems I am just a victim of plain bad timing for some players (or most of my OF). I dumped both Venable and Maybin and picked up Hall and M. Saunders. Not sure if they’ll turn out but as I said, I’m willing to try anything. Here’s a list of players available:
Mike Carp
Sean Rodriguez (2B, OF)
Daric Barton
Danny Worth (2B, SS)
Jamey Carroll (2B, 3B, SS, OF)
Adam Rosales (1B, 2B, 3B)
Scott Moore (2B, 3B)
Scott Hairston
Conor Jackson (1B, OF)
Pedro Alvarez
Fedro Feliz
Trevor Crowe
Kevin Frandsen (2B, 3B, SS)
Xavier Nady
Luis Valbuena (2B, SS)
Blake DeWitt (2B, 3B)
Roger Bernadina
Again, thanks for the help guys.
I would take a shot on Sean Rodriguez, Connor Jackson and Xavier Nady. Nady would be the least preferred, but if Derrek Lee gets traded there’s a good chance most of the 1b at bats will be his. Chad Tracy and a suddenly 30 Micah Hoffpauir may have some say in that before all’s said and done. But my bet would be on Nady unless he gets shipped out too.
You could also go ahead and grab Pedro Alvarez as the Pirates have been calling up their young guys recently. He could make enough of a stir to have some fairly significant trade value, or he may be worth holding onto.
