Tex-Jennings-Nolasco for Brett Anderson/Shelby Miller/Mo Rivera
The other owner wasn't content with a simple deal for a rental player in Mariano Rivera so he threw this out there. I'll admit that it intrigued me a bit. But of course I am in love with Brett Anderson so before pulling the trigger I need the collective opinion of the experts. So here goes:
I give up
1. Tex...on a decent deal for $20 and can be extended multiple years but 1B guys seem plentiful
2. Desmond Jennings.....I read that he was "Carl Crawford with plate discipline." That excites me. He's especially valuable in this league because he'll hit a few HRs, he'll drive in runs, and he steals bases.....to me, he's a big piece to the deal
3. Ricky Nolasco...i'm indifferent on him i guess.....he's due to be extended at the end of the year and i'm not really sure he's good enough for that.
I get
1. Brett Anderson...I gave him up in a deal for Grady Sizemore a few years ago and I'd really like to get him back
2. Shelby Miller...I love the Cardinals...I love that he's from Texas....And of course I love the "could be a frontline starter" talk
3. Mariano Rivera....I never like paying a lot for closers but I really think that I could make a nice run at the playoffs this year and all I'm really giving up here for Mo is Nolasco, which in my opinion isn't much

I’m not sold on this one…
Some questions I have…
1) Who replaces Tex in your lineup?
2) Are the other players on contracts too? And if so, what are they?
Realistically, I really like Brett Anderson going forward, especially since he’s under contract for 4 more seasons with the A’s and their behemoth stadium. However, I’m not sure that Teixeira AND Desmond Jennings are worth Anderson and Shelby Miller. Nolasco and Rivera are, like you said, similar in terms of value since Rivera provides more saves and better numbers, but is much older than Nolasco. Unless the contracts are drastically different or there is some other detail I am not seeing, I don’t think I do this deal.
contracts
Nolasco has to be extended at the end of the year which i doubt i’ll be doing so he is, for all intents and purposes, a 13-week rental
Rivera is on a yearly contract. but he’s getting paid too much as a closer to be extended. of course, there are some owners who would keep him at $16. but i’m not one of them. closers are too volatile and too easy to find
Anderson is on maybe the best contract in the league. in addition to that, good, young pitchers are VERY hard to find. the owner giving him up said his friend, a scout, said anderson will in the long run be better than strasberg LOL. i wouldn’t go nearly that far but i do think anderson may have a cy young or two in him
tex is getting paid $20 for the next few years. he’s on a contact that can’t be cut, meaning i am forced to keep him or trade him. but for our league, $20 for a masher like tex is a sweet deal
....
Butler will move over to 1B and then DH would be filled with Martin Prado or Sizemore when he comes off the DL. a possible counter could be:
anderson, rivera
FOR
tex, nolasco and then arodys vizcaino
i simply want to get desmond jennings out of the mix if at all possible
I think that could work better – I think Jennings is going to be a very good major leaguer when he comes up. If you can get Anderson still and keep Jennings, I’d do that.
Anderson definitely looks like the real deal to be sure. I’ll be interested to see what he does on Saturday (first start back from the DL)
Tex
I think Teixeira is the key to the deal – I do disagree a bit that you can get 1B production similar to him anywhere short of the top 2-4 1B guys. This may not be his year, or he might go bonkers from here on out… but in a normal year of 100+ R, 30+ HR and 125+ RBI, I don’t think you get that out of anyone else (I personally don’t sing the praises of Billy Butler, but he could fill in as long as you don’t expect Teix numbers out of him)… Pujols, Mig. Cabrera, Prince Fielder are the only other ones I would put in Teix’s category – you could argue Howard too but even then its only 5 guys that will approach those numbers. (And to think of it, they are probably the only 5 in all of baseball that would be as well rounded save for a couple others like Longoria, etc.)…
Be cautious with Anderson – innings increase and a sore arm (which he had happen previously last year I think too) would lead me to step lightly. I do like him, but wouldn’t give Teix and Jennings to get him.
Teix is quietly dominant – I wouldn’t do this deal if it were me (there may be other factors, but the offense he brings I think will far outweigh the saves Rivera gives and the little upgrade at SP that Anderson gives). Sorry to ramble on…
Not close
I think you could take out Nolasco and I’d still prefer Tex and Jennings. Throw in Nolasco, and it’s even further from reasonable. Just my opinion, of course.
Disclaimer: I’ve never played cash-based fantasy sports, so I’m looking at this from the perspective of ignoring the dollars.
Deal
I hate this deal for you. I am enamored with Anderson, but come on — Tex? For me, Nolasco is irrelevant and to a degree (other than this year) Mariano is also. I base that last on the fact that there are not too many more miles on Mariano’s tires. Shelby Miller is a great prospect, but … he is a prospect. He has yet to make it to the big leagues and there is no guarantee that he will be more than an average starter (if that). Jennings, also is a great prospect (better than Miller). Basically, you could break this down to Tex for Anderson (I say this knowing that Jennings is the better prospect over Miller). Good grief let me in your league! Irish
thanks for the advice
i never pulled trigger on the deal. and then i saw this on rotoworld and about pooped my pants….i was in love with anderson and it was almost to my detriment:
Brett Anderson will see a doctor on Friday in regards to the tightness in his elbow that forced him to leave Thursday’s start against the Red Sox.
“It’s kind of like a re-occurring of what happened last time,” said Anderson, referring to his recent stint on the disabled list. “It’s tough to tell how it is. … My slider just wasn’t the same. At-bats where there’s two strikes, it’s usually a putaway pitch. But I just left it over the middle.” We’ll know more on Friday, but it’s very possible that he could need flexor tendon surgery, which would require a lengthy absence.
