Fantasy Baseball: Trade Evaluation
I'm rebuilding a team right now and was offered the following trade.
I'd be giving up Cole Hamels/Nick Swisher for Aroldis Chapman/Brandon Webb/Mike Leake. Kind of torn on what to do. He'd be getting the best player in the deal, (Hamels) and I think Swisher could be a good source of power for another couple of years.... but i do love the upside of Chapman. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I assume keeper league?
I could give a better assessment if I knew a little bit more – keeper, minor leagues, draft pick trades, etc.?
I took over a last place team in a keeper league and really worked on getting draft picks involved in deals – meaning I wanted to upgrade my position or have multiple picks in a specific round, etc.
Personally I am neutral on Swisher and think Webb is better left for someone else to deal with. If the deal were Chapman and Leake for Hamels then I would probably say you should try to get some draft picks involved – example, give a 2nd rounder with the deal if he will give a 3rd and 6th… or something like that…
Again, depends on the league set-up, etc.
oh yeah
sorry, it is a keeper league!! straight up fantasy baseball, no salary’s involved. I appreciate the input… no draft pick trades either, and no limit to how many minor leaguers you can have.
not bad then
not a bad deal for late in the year and next year payoff

fair deal
Chapman has upside, Webb is a risk right now especially with news he is changing his arm slot. Leake is pitching very well and has reduced his BB totals after his first two starts.
There are still some questions about Hamels, if he can replicate his 2008 season. Not sure, but he should be solid pitching for the Phils.

I take that deal – Leake and Chapman both seem like they are going to be solid (if not necessarily amazing) for fantasy, and there’s a lot of upside for Webb.
How many keepers?
And how many teams? The value of Leake, Chapman, and even Hamels and Webb is very different in, say, a 10 team league with 3 keepers as opposed to something like a 14 team league with 8 keepers.
I don't like giving up the best player in the deal
Webb, IMO, may never be a fantasy quantity again. Who knows if the sinker’s the same out of a different arm slot? Kind of depends on how much you value the potential of Chapman and Leake. I prefer the established top tier starter with great offensive support, plus a useful hitter.
