Minor League Daily Update: Thursday 5/13/2010

Here is Thursday’s group of minor league players.  Their statistics shown are for May 6 through May 12.  Some quick newsworthy notes:

• Josh Bell may well find himself in Baltimore at some point (mid-year?) with the O’s looking terrible thus far.  Bell has played well and every team looks for the guy who can be a spark when they come up. 
• Fernando Martinez simply can not stay healthy – after being back for just a couple games with a back issue, he now has a problem with his leg.  I will be looking for more specifics on the injury but its safe to say that Martinez simply can’t stay on the field.  This isn’t a new revelation as he has had problems every year of his professional career, but is frustrating since he is so talented.
• Jason Donald is doing a little of everything and with the Indians floundering about like a Lake Erie Walleye, he could get some time similar to Bell’s situation mentioned above.
• Andrew Cashner was promoted to AAA in the Cubs’ system and responded with a very good outing.  He finished AA ball with 22 Hits allowed in 36 IP and struck out 42 batters vs. 13 walks.
• In more Cubs news, Jay Jackson was moved to the bullpen after beginning the year as a starter.
• Mike Minor has been racking up the K’s (54K’s in 36IP) and is limiting hits (30 hits).  He isn’t getting wins but is showing some good potential with those kind of numbers.
• Brandon Erbe and Aaron Poreda are simply walking too many batters to be effective. 
• Derek Holland (not on the list below) was promoted earlier this week and made his first MLB start of the year yesterday.  He got the win, struck out 7 in 6 IP and allowed 5 hits with 0 ER.  He should be up for good with Texas.
