Fantasy Baseball: All Questions Answered Thread
I am going to follow in the footsteps of John Sickels and post an all questions answered thread. I have recently received some keeper league questions, and would like to open that up again, but do so on the site, rather than via email to see if this is more helpful.
So feel free to post any fantasy baseball related questions you may have.

Different Strategy
I’ve got a question about whether or not engaging in a specific strategy could work.
So for forever we’ve been told “wait on pitching” and “hitting is more important” and “only spend $60 at most in your auction on pitching”.
I think we’ve gone way too far about this. While I won’t disagree that pitching is more volatile, at the top, I think an all ace staff would be a good idea.
Furthermore, while a good amount of closers do fail, I think by looking at the skills, health, and who else is in the bullpen you can identify a few closers who are very likely to keep their jobs. (Plus, in a league like mine using a weekly FAAB for add/drops you can’t just say you’ll pick up saves on the waiver wire).
All that is to set the stage for a different strategy. Punting power (HR and RBI) and trying to win R, SB, and AVG as well as all the pitching categories.
How I think this would work is by taking a whole bunch of high average, runs, and SB guys in the OF and SS for around $10 each (Borbon, Rajai Davis, Denard Span, Dexter Fowler, Alcides Escobar, Theriot, etc) and then a bunch of high BB% and high average infielders (Polanco, Helton, Kendrick, Prado, Asdrubal Cabrera, etc).
What do you think? Obviously, you’ve got to hope that there isn’t too much inflation for the top starters. And the targeted player pool is very limited so if you don’t get who you want you might be in trouble.
Here’s what I was able to do in my first mock auction on ESPN today:
Team Kellemen
C Miguel Montero 11
1B Todd Helton 7
2B Placido Polanco 5
3B Martin Prado 5
SS Alcides Escobar 6
2B/SS Howie Kendrick 9
1B/3B Chone Figgins 14
OF Juan Pierre 10
OF Denard Span 10
OF Julio Borbon 11
OF Dexter Fowler 10
OF Rajai Davis 9
UTIL Ryan Theriot 4
P Jose Valverde 8
P Chad Qualls 8
P CC Sabathia 19
P Tim Lincecum 29
P Brian Wilson 11
P Huston Street 11
P Zack Greinke 19
P Adam Wainwright 16
P Brett Anderson 10
BE Octavio Dotel 1
BE Everth Cabrera 3
BE Frank Francisco 10
Total: 256
Remaining: 4
I like the strategy
a friend in my NLonly non keeper league has tried it, but with no success, but he has come very close. I think to be successful with this strategy you must grab one of the top SB guys-Ellsbury, Bourn, Morgan, etc. Heck even Matt Kemp will give you solid contributions in all 5 categories.
I don’t think you need 4 closers though. You should grab a few ace pitchers and top SB guys, and focus on SP who have solid K/BB ratios as they are the ones who usually have the solid ERA and WHIP stats.
With that said, I like your draft.

First, I got lucky. I’m in a keeper league where Crawford went for $12 last year coming off his injury and I trade for him mid-season, so I’ve got a top guy locked down. I’ve also got Borbon for $6 and Nyjer Morgan for $6. So I’m most of the way there on SB.
Why not as many closers? Since I’m already punting two categories, I can’t afford to wait for saves on the waiver wire (at least that is what I’ve been thinking).
I could see going with just four closers (rather than six) and then picking up some more SP with upside. But I think that at a minimum I need to come away from the table with four closers.

Closers
I think you would run away with saves with 4 closers where it wouldn’t even be close. You also need to win Wins and K’s right? I won a 5×5 league by drafting just closers and releivers and only needed 3 closers, plus you can grab a few off the waiver wire when one goes down or loses the job if you need to.
You are definitely set with speed with Crawford, Morgan and Borbon.

Heyward and Dynasty ADP's
What group of outfielders would you put Jason Heyward with if you are drafting for a dynasty league.
Also, if not too much to ask, I haven’t seen any ADP’s for dynasty drafts around. What would your top 15 be? Thanks!
new league?
is the league just starting?
I am not familiar with dynasty leagues. But will take a look and respond on Thursday.

2015 Fantasy All-Star Team
Limited to under 600 AB and younger, who would you select/change/add to for the 2015 All-Star Game?
C: Wieters / Posey
1B: Alvarez / Smoak
2B: G. Beckham / Lawrie
3B: Chisenhal / Wood
SS: Escobar / Andrus
COF: Stanton / Taylor
CF: Jennings / Ackley
COF: Heyward / Morrison
DH: Monterro
NL 12 team 5x5
Due to some trades to try to get first (failure, ended up 2nd), my last keeper is up in the air.
Save players:
Pujols
Fielder
Kemp
J. Upton
Broxton
It’s my last spot that I’m not sure about. Candidates are:
Coghlan
Milledge
C. Zambrano
I have some others, but I think these guys are the top 3.
Who do you like and why? Thanks.
Milledge
If he is healthy, he should hit more HRs and steal more bases than Coghlan. I am fan of grabbing the hitter over the pitcher. Check out how Milledge is hitting in spring training.Maybe 2010 is his breakout year?

but who is really talking about Milledge this year? If KDean75 is interested in having both guys back on his team next year I think he might be able to get Milledge back cheap.

i lean
towards Milledge, and I agree with keeping hitters over pitchers.
I would keep Coghlan, if he qualified at 2B, but he doesn’t.
Only thing is that I’m sure in the draft, I could get Milledge back, but maybe not the other two. Does that make sense?
Coghlan
Coghlan does not have much value as an OFer….10 HRs, 15 SBs and he won’t hit .320 again this season. His hit rate was 40% last year….I don’t see him duplicating that.
Milledge, if healthy and his head on straight, could give you 15-20 with a .280 avg. Basically, he’s hit a few more HRs and steal a few more bases imo.

Keeper League Question
12 team 6×6 league (holds and walks). We’re allowed 5 keepers with round inflation. Whatever round the keeper was taken the year before, he is kept 3 rounds up from that (e.g. an 18th round pick would be kept in the 15th round). I’m keeping Longoria in the 9th round, but can’t decide the remaining four from these options (round kept in parenthesis):
Billy Butler (14)
Alexei Ramirez (17)
Julio Borbon (20)
Denard Span (11)
Carlos Gonzalez (21)
Wandy Rodriguez (22)
Jered Weaver (17)
Rick Porcello (21)
I’m leaning towards Butler, Ramirez, CarGo and Wandy. What do you think?
I agree
with your 4 choices.

extension question
AL only 4×4 keeper league. I have a roster that can win this year. I currently own Shin Soo Choo at $10. Do I extend him for another season to $15 or ride him out at $10?
I am 50/50 at this point. The extra $5 may come in handy at the auction but at the same time he is still a good value at $15.
Raise him
he’s one of only 4 AL-only hitters to go 20-20 in 2009, as there were 10 in the NL last year. Choo, if he can repeat, is a commodity in the AL. its possible new manager Acta gives him the green light more since Choo does get on base alot.

Ok couple of ?'s
Im in a dynasty league and looking to win now.
1. Ive got people asking about J. Reyes right now my backup SS’s are A. Escobar and S. Castro. Would you be comfortable trading Reyes?
2. Right now my OF looks like this Shin-Soo Choo, Corey Hart, Alex Rios, Cameron Maybin, and Chris Young. Can you see three guys giving me enough reason to start them or would you try and add a more sure thing?

Reyes/OF
1. I think Reyes is a risk, but should he prove healthy, his value will go up. But, will the Mets allow him to run as much after the injury last season? All of his value is in his speed and runs scored.
2. OF-I would want more of a sure thing in that OF. Choo should be fine, but Hart and Rios aren’t reliable. Maybin has yet to prove anything in the majors, and Young is close to being a platoon if he continues to hit in the low .200’s with all the Ks.
If you can get an upgrade in the OF for Reyes, I would do it…but it would have to be someone who is drafted in the same round as Reyes. The outlook on Reyes right now is positive….he appears to be healthy…so that could help you in any trade talk. Plus the experts are high on him for the most part.

On a related note
During our roster cuts this year to get down to the right size Denard Span got cut. Julio Borbón is also a FA. We just use our WP from last year and im sitting at number 1. Thinking of just pulling the trigger on Span for Chris Young.
