I now have 3 offers on the table.
Deal #1: I trade Nick Markakis for Gordon Beckham.
Deal #2: I trade Nick Markakis, Nick Weglarz, Brett Wallace, and Thomas Neal for Billy Butler, Matt Capps, and David Aardsma.
Deal #3: I trade Nick Markakis, Brett Wallace, and Thomas Neal for Billy Butler and Matt Capps.
I have Ortiz slotted in at 1B right now, but he'll lose 1B eligibility next year (missed it by 1 start), so I'll have Stanton, Markakis, and Ortiz for 2 spots.
I like Butler a good amount, and view him as a nice 1B with a similar skill set as Markakis, but the potential to hit 25-30 HR.

2b looks like a hole unless Felipe Lopez gets a lot of ab’s. Who is available as FA at 1b and 2b? I like Markakis quite a bit, even more than Butler. And I think Markakis has more potential to hit 25-30 homers than Billy. But they both have very nice bats. Wallace and Morse are intriguing players- does Morse qualify at 1b? If Dunn goes elsewhere Morse should see a lot of 1b at bats if he can stay healthy, which is a big if. Wallace on the other hand will probably have a lot of ups and downs in 2011. This is what, his 4th MLB system in his 2 years? Not many players move like that unless there are some major question marks to go along with some major upside. He could k 200 times next year…and so could his corner counterpart Chris Johnson. I’m not sure what the Astros expect to get out of 2011 but if Wallace and Johnson both see 500+ ab’s there will be a pretty streaky offense IMO and a very mediocre team run total. Fangraphs has some good info on both Wallace and Johnson and their bb% and k% for their MiLB and MLB look pretty similar. Unless the Astros have some pretty spectacular OBP guys at the top of their lineup I just don’t see them sticking with Wallace and Johnson in the middle of their line up- but I guess they may not have a lot of choice in the matter either.

What’s the chances of getting Beckhem or Butler without giving up Markakis? I see Ortiz as having a similar 2011 as he did in 2008-10 – slow start and pretty decent second half. His value is fairly high now (minus your issue with him losing eligibility). But if he is not traded now he probably won’t really have much trade value until the All Star break next year.
I cannot get either Beckham or Butler without giving up Markakis.
And the FA market is so thin. It’s a 20 team dynasty with 25 man MLB rosters and 20 man MiLB.
