Arizona Fall League Roundup: Brandon Belt, Conor Gillaspie Star
Is it me or does every deal Theo Epstein makes always made to be a "smart" deal. Epstein traded for Marlins pitcher Andrew Miller, a former first round pick. This deal was praised by several baseball writers, but I have to agree with Kevin Goldstein from Baseball Prospectus on this deal:
Love how Andrew Miller was mechanically broken mess w/#Marlins, yet trade to #RedSox makes him a diamond in the rough. #FoolYouTwice
I remember Epstein signing Brad Penny and John Smoltz a few seasons ago, and was praised up and down for those deals. How did they turn out?

"Smart" moves
Not all smart moves pan out, just like some dumb ones do.
On the risk/reward scale, I can’t see how anyone wouldn’t find a spare bullpen arm for a high risk/high reward project a good move. It most likely won’t work out, but that’s not why people are calling it smart…
to me
it appears the media call every move he makes smart, and don’t call him out when they don’t turn out so well, but are quick to bash moves made by other GMs. that was my point.
