Fantasy Baseball: Jason Grey's Who Would You Rather Draft

I was just reading this over at ESPN and thought I would post it:

The Name Game ...
Which player would you rather draft in 2010?

Hanley Ramirez or Alex Rodriguez? Ramirez
Tim Lincecum or Zack Greinke? Lincecum
Roy Halladay or Chris Carpenter? Halladay
Ryan Braun or Matt Kemp? Kemp
Yovani Gallardo or Josh Johnson? Johnson
Prince Fielder or Ryan Howard? Fielder
Adam Lind or Josh Hamilton? Lind
Aaron Hill or Ben Zobrist? Zobrist
Evan Longoria or Mark Teixeira? Teixeira
Mariano Rivera or Jonathan Broxton? Broxton

Kemp over Braun?

I concur

Kemp over Braun as well. I took Kemp 2nd overall in my last mixed mock. Runs, homers, RBI, and avg between the two are nearly inseparable but as long as Rhianna doesn’t wear out Kemp’s legs, Matt is going to run more and that is the difference maker for me.

+1

Jason-I agree as well, as I have been pounding the Kemp table since September.
I was bashed for taking him 2nd overall in the Fake Teams early mock draft.
I think Kemp will be a 30-30 guy in 2010, and we haven’t seen his peak power yet. He made tremendous strides at the plate last year compared to 2008 imo.

I'm with both of you

Here’s my picks for the players mentioned:
Hanley over A-Rod

Lincecum over Greinke

Halladay over Carpenter

Kemp over Braun (Kemp is the #1 fantasy OF in my opinion right now, maybe Sizemore if he gets healthy)

Johnson over Gallardo (until Gallardo gets better control)

Fielder over Howard

Lind over Hamilton (I don’t even know what to think about Hamilton anymore)

Hill over Zobrist (this is really close, hill won’t have as much power this year, and Zobrist will finally be at just one position instead of moving around so this could change)

Teixeira over Longoria (until Longoria picks up his average it’s not a question)

Broxton over Mariano (even though Mariano hasn’t slowed down from age yet he has to eventually, and Broxton’s K/9 is ridiculous)

I still think I’d take Braun over Kemp at this point. He does have the ability to go 30/30, but I’m not drafting my first rounder based on what his upside is when there is a player who has been consistently worth a first round pick.

That doesn’t mean I don’t think Kemp will go 30/30, I’m just not willing to spend a top 5 pick to find out.

I understand

the reasoning, but if you compare their stats from 2009, Kemp was very comparable to Braun in every category, with Kemp dominating Braun in the SB category.
It comes down to whether Braun is a 40 HR guy or not. If not, then Kemp is the choice for me. I could be wrong with the 30-30 line, but I think he still has room to grow power-wise, and am very confident he attains 30-30 in 2010.

Upton

What about Justin Upton? I think he may end up as good as Braun or Kemp but taken in the 3rd round.

Personally, I’d take J-Up at the end of the 1st.

J-Up

I like Upton….may have to post a Who would you rather have b/w Braun and Upton. I have taken him in every mock draft at the end of the 2nd round. People aren’t believers yet, but he should out-perform Wright who continues to be drafted in the first round.

I would have no issue drafting him there. I do love me some Upton. Justin, of course.

Here are my predictions for both...

so I can try to make a better guess at who to take.

Braun:
.315 / 35 HRs / 110 RBIs / 15 SBs

Kemp:
.298 / 28 HRs / 100 RBIs / 35 SBs

They seem really evenly matched, and I like Matt Kemp more as a player and before really analyzing both of them I though that I would rather have Kemp. But now, I realize that fantasy-wise Braun is still superior. Braun will get more runs, more hits, more doubles, a comparable amount of triples, more walks, and less strikeouts.

Braun, as of now, is still the superior fantasy option. Of course this is all just speculation of what they will do next year but I’m taking Braun before Kemp.

superior?

I wouldn’t go that far. I have already compared their stats a few times. Take a look at past articles on Kemp and Braun, it’s closer than you think.
