Ron Shandlers' Top 5 Picks for 2010
From his free weekly email, Ron Shandler provided his preliminary top five picks for 2010 mixed league drafts. Raygu will be very pleased to see #3 at least.
1. Pujols
2. Braun
3. Kemp
4. Crawford
5. Ramirez.
Is he crazy? If not, there seems to be a premium placed on OF as a scarcer position than most long-time fantasy players consider it to be.

Lincecum
I know most experts shun drafting pitchers early but I think you have to put Lincecum in the discussion.

can’t say I disagree with DB11.
But Eric is right, I was happy to see Kemp at 3….surprised yes, but not overly surprised. I mentioned to Eric, as well as to a friend the other night, I hope I can pick in the top 5 in my NL-only draft next year to get Kemp. Of course, drafting #1 or 2 would be nice. Not sure I would draft Braun over Hanley at 2. If I don’t get to pick in top 5, I hope Lincecum jumps up, and I am sure he will in my league.

Top 12 picks:
1. Pujols
2. Hanley
3. Arod
4. Cabrera
5. Wright
6. Braun
7. Lincecum
8. Reyes
9. Tiexiera
10. Fielder
11. Upton
12. Fielder
13. Kemp
Frankly, Upton and Kemp are probably interchangeable. They have similar numbers in terms of hr, sb, runs, rbi, avg, obp. I don’t believe Crawford is ever worthy of a top 10 pick let alone top 5. HanRam has to be #2 overall due to position scarcity- there just aren’t enough players that produce like him at that position. Arod is Arod and deserves #3 with that short porch in RF in Yankee Stadium. He could slide down to 5 or 6 though depending on preference. Wright is still a top 5 pick if he’s healthy. I believe his power comes back and he shows 25/25 in terms of power and steals with his Runs/RBI/Avg around their career norms.

First off,
After rethinking this, I’d move Wright down, put Utley where between 6-8, and move Reyes into the 2nd round.
As for Crawford, he’s statistically performing how he did from 2004-2006. In 2007/2008, he suffered injuries and had down years. Crawford, I believe, should be a 2nd/3rd round pick. 2009 is his career year where he’s had an uptick in steals and average. The guy only really dominates one category and that’s steals (same argument with Reyes without position scarcity). Steals can be found later. I believe having a true 30-40 hr player, who provides a good avg, RBI, Runs is more important. There are fewer of those types than there are of Crawford. Technically, you could draft Michael Bourn, Dexter Fowler later, Morgan, Ellsbury, Figgins, Roberts, Abreu, Raveras, Ichiro, Andrus, Bartlett, even Juan Pierre later in the draft. Speed is vastly available. I just don’t see the point in using a top 5-top 10 pick on Crawford. He simply isn’t that good, injury prone, and overly reliant on his legs.

By the way,
the Upton I’m referring to is Justin, not BJ who is probably available in the 3rd…
