KEEPER ADVICE
I’m entering my 3rd season in a NFL keeper league. I won in ’07 when I had Brady, Moss, Portis, and Addai. I kept them, and therefore ’08 was tough. I finished 8th of 10 teams. Now, going into ’09 I want to return to form. I’m going to post my roster from the end of last year, highlight the players I’m planning on keeping as of now, and then open up discussion with a few questions.
First, know that the league I’m in has larger rosters than the typical format, and the scoring favors the QBs a little more than the RBs, though backs are still key.
KEEPER RULES:
6 players out of this group: QB, RB, WR, TE
1 Rookie player any position
1 Team Defense
2 Individual Defensive players
MY ROSTER:
QB:
Tom Brady – NE
Matt Ryan – ATL*
Jay Cutler – CHI
Joe Flacco – BAL*
RB:
Clinton Portis – WAS
Joseph Addai – IND
Mewelde Moore – PIT
Ahmad Bradshaw – NYG
WR:
Brandon Marshall – DEN
Randy Moss – NE
Santonio Holmes – PIT
Anthony Gonzales – IND
Amani Toomer – NYG
TE:
Tony Scheffler – DEN
Kevin Boss – NYG
Donald Lee – GB
DEF:
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
San Diego Chargers
New England Patriots
IDP:
Karlos Dansby – ARI
Lance Briggs – CHI
Quentin Jammer – SD
Cedric Griffin – MIN
Keith Bullock – TEN
* - ’08 rookies
bold/italic – players I plan to keep as of now.
So there you have it, have a field day. My questions are:
1. Who would you keep, based upon the above rules?
2. How would you approach the draft, given I will be picking 3rd and it snakes?
3. What fantasy magazine would be most helpful for me to analyze in order to prepare my draft board?
Feel free to add further questions or offer any feedback you like.

OK
Do you lose draft picks depending on where the player was selected?
Why not Portis? I’d imagine he’d be a top RB after adjusting for all the other teams protecting their RBs.
RBs
Great point. I hadnt highlighted any RBs cuz I was sort of puzzled as to what to do. I like Portis, and think he’s the best I’ve got. Joe Addai killed me last year, but I look for him to rebound. BUT, is he worth keeping or can I get him in the draft later on? Thanks for your feedback, I agree with your assessment on Portis.
Rule of thumb
Six players per team kept times ten teams is 60 players. 10 rounds means the first six rounds of players will be kept. The rookie rule can clearly stop that as Chris Johnson and Steve Slaton could have been on the same team.
Clinton Portis is a lock to be a Top 25 pick and hence an easy protect.
Id say Portis, Brady, Marshall, Moss, Gonzales would be 5 of the 6 you have to keep. Then it comes down to how many you start at each postion and what you think will be avalibe in the late rounds you like. Cutler, Addai, and Holmes could all be the 6th guy. Id prolly go Addai since in a league with this many keepers I cant see a lot of good RB’s out there

I enjoy Rotowire’s magazine even if FT didn’t have a spot in it for the sleepers and busts. Chris Liss has a good philosophy on risk/reward that permeates the mag.
