OF Carlos Gomez. Minnesota Twins:  The early season victim of a healthy, and more productive, Minnsoeta Twins outfield jam, Gomez has been given new life thanks to the injuries of Michael Cuddyer and Denard Span.  He hit a HR and stole his 5th base.  Unfortunately, he doesn't appear to steal bases despite the recent run of everyday playing time.

DH Andruw Jones, Texas Rangers:  Jones homered for the second consecutive game against his former team.  Prior to this series, Jones was mired in a 2-25 slump that saw his feel-good story go from a .288 AVg to .248.  Unfortunately, Andruw doesn't face his fomrer teasm for the remainder of inter-league play.

3B Gordon Beckham, Chicago White Sox:  The White Sox rookie went 1-4 with a double and is hitting an embarassing 114/184/171 in his 1st ten major league games.  He does have an 86% contact rate so there is hope that a min-break is about to occur.

OF Andrew McCutchen. Pittsburgh Pirates:  2-3 with a SB and two walks bring the rookie's 49 AB season to a respectable 327/377/429.  His 82% may indicate some luck involved in the AVG so beware.

C Kelly Shoppach, Cleveland Indians:  Before the season began, Shoppach was a trendy deep sleeper at catcher thanks to a 21 HR 2008.  He hit his 5th HR and now sports an unseemly 200/331/357 slashstat line.  Thanks to a 59% contact rate, I wouldn't be optimistic, but his contact rate was just 62% last year, and just 65% in 2007.  In both seasons, Shoppach hit .261.

8th Inning Holds: Ramon Troncosco LAD (6), John Grabow PIT (11)

Saves: Matt Capps PIT (16), Boby Jenks CSW (14), J.P. Howell TB (3), Jonathan Broxton LAD (16)

Question

Why are you associating McCutchen’s contact rate with luck?

Contact rate

His AVG and OBP spread is mighty small. I don’t think an average-sih contact rate without the walks can support a .327 AVG.

Agreed...

but CT% is a skill-based number. Luck is not a factor. His .327 average being unsustainable based on his CT rate and walk rate is probably a valid statement, but I’d attribute it to his .400 BABIP.
