Trade/Sell High Value: Wieters/Napoli

I'm in a 12 team 7x7 (5x5 + 2B, BB), 1 Catcher H2H league.

I have both Wieters and Napoli and am stuck trying to figure out who I'll gain more net value from in a trade.

I can trade Napoli (who appears likely to get plenty of C and DH starts for the rest of the season with legit HR power) while he's playing high above his average and keep Wieters for the stretch.

Or I can trade Wieters on name value and minor league history before finding out if the talent will immediately translate to the majors as seemlessly as everyone thinks/hopes it will.

Obviously I can probably snag a bigger fish with Wieters (especially in a league with DC/VA/MD managers)...

So my question is, will Napoli likely perform well enough that it's more worth my time to use Wieters for trade, or am I better off trading Napoli to get a lesser player because Wieters' statline compared to Napoli's will make all the difference?

Wieters will probably be up by June 9 when the Orioles return from a long West Coast swing. If he does well after the call-up, his value will definitely increase over what it is now. Obviously, if he struggles, it may be a bit less than it is now, but at least he’ll be playing.

As for right now, another owner may find Wieters appealing especially if they don’t have to use a roster spot on him for more than a short time. unfortunately, there’s still that uncertainty around when he’ll be called up.

Anyway, if Wieters performs well after the promotion, then you have a nice problem of having 2 good catchers and you can reassess at that point what to do with them. On the other hand, if he performs poorly, then at least you still have Napoli, who I wouldn’t recommend trading until after Wieters is up because if Wieters struggles, then you’re in a really tough spot.

Also, assuming you’ve had Wieters on your roster for some time, you might want to wait for the benefit to pay off and get as much value out of him as you can. Otherwise you were basically holding onto him for someone else who will reap most of the benefit and probably selling a bit low if he turns out to be the stud everyone thinks he will be.

Bottom line: if you can trade him or package him to get full value for him, you should (not for its own sake, but to fill a bigger need or upgrade another position), but if you’re selling low, then wait and see what you really have with the knowledge that there is some risk that he could struggle like a lot of rookies do.

Good point

About holding Wieters this long. Opportunities were lost. To sell now, would sink those. However, I think using Wieters to address other deficits on the roster is a good use of the asset.

I’m not convinced how much better Wieters will be over Napoli. Esp since the league includes BBs which we know Napoli takes right now. I’d expect Wieters to “struggle” a little with that skill. He isn’t walking at his AA pace in AAA Norfolk right now.

Nihilus, have you tested the trade market for either?

Thanks for the input!

It’s an interesting perspective to think that to trade away Wieters now (yes, I drafter him from the beginning and have held on) would turn out to be a total loss…but my very thought is whether I am likely to get better value for him now (based on hype, track record and recent surge in the minors) than I would once he comes up…particularly if he struggles.

And..I was actually thinking that offering him up this close to the call-up makes him more attractive to other managers (who wouldn’t devalue him based on games he won’t play for them…a la Manny).

Another good piece of input on the walks. One that may elude other managers. The subtle benefit of being in a wider stat league (7×7) is that so many rating systems and reviews are normally based upon the presumed 5×5 standard that you can use it to slightly overvalue (or undervalue) players.

I haven’t tested the market for either yet. I’m not really desperate for any need at the moment, although I think my SP ranks could use a tune up. I had Haren, Vazquez, Nolasco, Myers and Jered Weaver to start off. Snagged Volquez off the waiver wire as well as Hanson in an effort to boost things (though neither’s playing at the moment) and managed to trade off two waiver grabs for Kazmir in the hopes he can turn it around. Just gave up on Nolasco today, dropping him.

Here’s my roster in case anyone see’s any needs I’m missing or possible upgrades:

C – Napoli
1B – Dunn
2B – Uggla/Asdrubal Cabrera
SS – HardyAsdrubal Cabrera
3B – M. Cabrera
IF – Konerko
LF – Carlos Lee
CF – Beltran
RF – Dye
Util – Pierre

Bench: Wieters, (A. Cabrera…who I actually play consistently and then platoon either Uggla or Hardy depending on who’s not streaking worse)

SP – Haren
SP – Vazquez
SP – Kazmir
SP – Volquez
SP – Myers
SP – Hanson
RP – F. Francisco
RP – Capps

Thanks again for the insight! :)

Unless you are playing a keep league

where you keep the guys from the season after season, trade wieters, he is a big name, but Napoli will produce for you this year.

FWIW

With Vlad back, Napoli won’t be able to get ABs at DH. Depending on Scioscia’s love of Jeff Mathis, Naps will lose ABs to keeping him fresh.
