Can Anyone Trade For Tim Lincecum?

In my NL-Only $260 auction 4x4 keeper league, I made an effort to acquire San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum.  Knowing it would take an excellent offer to get the other team to even consider answering the email, I made a proposal that accounted for current and future value using my best keepers.

To do so, I offered OF Nate McLouth and Milwaukee Brewers' #1 prospect SS Alcides Escobar.  With a bump, McLouth would be $9 in 2009 and 2010.  Similarly, Tim Lincecum would be $15 in each season.  Escobar is considered a can't-miss defensive whiz with SBs.  At $5 in 2009 and 2010, assuming he is recalled this season, he seems like a great value.

This was not enough.  I blinked and offered to include $5 1B Gaby Sanchez.  Still no go.

Now, I felt I was way out on the proverbial branch and ready to break it if I added yet another prospect or minor league pick much less an undervalued hitter.  I did offer to substitute Atlanta Braves CF Jordan Schafer or Brewers' 3B Mat  Gamel for Escobar.

That didn't work either.

Poll
Should I have offered Nate McLouth, Alcides Escobar, Gaby Sanchez and either Jordan Schafer or Mat Gamel?
Yes, Adding an ace starting pitcher would make-up for the four categories of McLouth and the upsides of the three prospects.

No. McLouth is a non-pitcher and seems more likely to retain his value in 2010 and the inclusion of three prospects is crazy.

no

can SF’s offense actually get him 18 wins again? your in a non K league also……..the thing when people talk about trades is we dont know what the other person’s team looks like,he might have a bomb squad offense and no pitching besides Tim Lin,the prospects might not even help him this year if he’s close to winning, alot more to trades then players offered in keeper leagues

Piling on the Prospects

I am sure that the other team considers itself to be a potential contender. So I am guessing that adding a ton of prospects makes that much of a difference.

Doesn't

No Trade

I don’t think he’s tradeable for any of that. Lince is often considered the top P, and certainly one of the top 3. None of what you’re offering can take the place of a top 3 player at their position, especially when there’s such a significant drop-off after the top 3. The 4th best SP is a far cry from 3rd best.

None of the guys you offered could possibly have helped the Lince owner (more than Lince will help him) unless he had the most ridiculous pitching staff in existence.

bleh....

Don’t get me wrong I would try to do that deal to if I were you…..but if you offered it to me I would laugh at you…..I take it the guy you made the offer too is the dumb guy in the league? Who is rebuilding before the season starts?? And if you are you need to quit playing this game because you don’t have a clue apparently…..I like McClouth but he could be in for a soph slump or worse is a one year wonder….I don’t blame you for trying to get max bank on him……

Lincecum

isn’t he capable of a soph slump or injury? If that deal was offered to me I would give it serious consideration….but that is just me.
Gamel should be a starter at 3b or 1b should Fielder gets dealt, which is quite possible should the brewers not contend.

agreed

Even if it’s value it doesn’t really seem to help him (short of knowing all the details).

really?

admittedly in 4X4 Lince is not as valuable but all those players have serious questionable value especially for this year as well. Jury is out on McLouth, some believe in the 1st half but I think many more believe his second half is more realistic and Pirates and fantasy owners may regret their investments. Escobar is still blocked in Mil and headed for AAA, even when he gets his shot he may not provide much else but SB & an excellent glove right away and Gamel has no position and has had 1 great half in AA and seems to have limited power and no position and unless this team is dumping in March there is absolutely no reason to consider it,

26/23

and McLouth was not one of em last yr and I doubt he’s one this year. He had 4 HR’s in Aug/Sept last yr and I would never part w/ Lince before the season for anything less than a sure fire stud. I was all over McLouth last year in draft and this year I’d prefer top stay away….

Lincecum

does he win 18 games this year with that lineup? does he throw up a sub 3 ERA again? that is what you are assuming, no? you cna make a case that he doesn’t replicate last years stats, can’t you?

Risk

Maybe I am biased because I see TimLin more often but…

I think that TimLin is less risky than McClouth. Agreed no guarantees, but his talent level is a step above. McLouth has struggled before at the MLB level. These farm players address the risk by giving more lottery tickets, but not a more secure asset.

Well, let's update the masses

The TimLin deal..(not Mike Timlin mind you)… did, in fact get done. But Eric, the expectant one, did have to increase the offer to McLouth and Yunel Esacobar at $10 in his final year and Gaby Sanchez at $5. Possibly because you pollsters and arbiters of common sense told him so.

If I had Lincecum

I still wouldn’t have made the deal. If I was contending, none of those guys would replace what I’m losing. If I’m looking to the future, I’d still rather have Lincecum.

My complaint here is with the choices in the poll. The choice was either (a) do I increase what I’m offering with prospects, or (b) stand pat with my offer. I would have preferred a choice © am I going to have to offer some top major league players as well.

The wind is in the buffalo.
