Prospect Draft - Top 10 '08 Draft Board
With spring training right around the corner, fantasy baseball drafts are soon to follow. For players only signed last year (examples and conditions below), what would be the top ten on your draft board?
Conditions: Standard 5x5 roto scoring. You retain the rights to your prospect through 2 full major league seasons, thus there you don't need to unneccessarily focus on major league ready college prospects.
Talent pool: Anyone who signed a deal in '08. That includes a '08 draftee (ex: Alvarez but not Crow), international free agent (ex: Tazawa and Viciedo) or bonus baby (ex: Inoa).
My initial pass:
#1 3b - Alvarez - PIT
#2 ss - T. Beckham - TB
#3 c - Posey - SF
#4 1b - Hosmer - KC
#5 sp - Matusz - BAL
#6 1b - Smoak - TEX
#7 ss - G. Beckham - CHW
#8 1b - Alonso - CIN
#9 3b - Wallace - STL
#10 c - Skipworth - FLA

I’d place Smoak and Wallace higher as I think each will be ready at the same time as Alvarez. While I wouldn’t take Beckham or Skipworth ahead of the others because I like my prospects to make fantasy contributions sooner rather than later, you could also include the kid in SD – Jaff Decker.
Here is what Kevin Goldstein at BP wrote:
Decker was one of the best pure hitters in the draft. For a teenager, his strike zone recognition borders on the sublime; in his first exposure to pro ball, he almost never swung at a bad pitch. He adds plenty of loft and backspin on contact, and is already drawing the occasional Brian Giles comparison. He plays a fundamentally sound outfield and has a strong arm.
