Are The New York Yankees Going To Sign Barry Bonds?

Amongst the topics discussed in yesterday's Tampa confab of Yankees' brass, was the topic of Barry Bonds.  With an outfield of Brett Gardner, Justin Christian, Melky Cabrera and Bobby Abreu, Bonds' bat would certainly improve upon that group.

The question is whether Bonds is worth the baggage of public relations' hits and the re-opening of the steroids wounds inflicted by Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and the Mitchell Report.  There does not appear to be any other issue that needs to be resolved.

Is there any other issue to resolve but the P.R. one?

Poll
Should the Yankees, or any other team, sign Barry bonds?
  • No. As the face of steroids, nothing else he can provide matters.
  • Yes. Winning will improve any initial P.R. hits Bonds has following him into the clubhouse.

Bonds

Scott (Ithaca,NY): It is wrong for me to have Barry Bonds on my wish list as a die hard Yankee fan…I mean I do dislike the guy, but I never doubted his talent and even at 44 years old I have a feeling he could hit in his sleep.

Jayson Stark: (1:24 PM ET ) I think you’re right that Barry can still hit. I keep reminding people he had a higher slugging percentage last year than Mark Teixeira and reached base more times than Manny Ramirez. But at this point, I don’t know why there’d be any reason to think he’s going to wind up playing again. If it hasn’t happened by now, why would it happen in the next two months?
