Taking a break from the review of NFL rookies, there have been a few running back transactions in the league:
Denver - Signed RB Michael Pittman to a one year contract.
Fantasy Impact – Not much. Pittman joins a mob of guys including Andre Hall, Mike Bell, Selvin Young and rookie Ryan Torain trying to be the backup to starter Travis Henry. Pittman is a known quantity so he’ll probably get the first call if Henry were to get injured, although he’d share carries with the other guys. This move makes it even harder for Torain to find a spot on the team.
NY Jets – Signed RB Musa Smith
Fantasy Impact – Small (for now). The Jets running game will be Thomas Jones and Leon Washington, and there may not be enough carries for those two. Smith is a bruising back (6’0”, 232 lbs) but he won’t see the field often unless there’s an injury. If there IS an injury, particularly to Thomas Jones, Smith would likely start for the Jets. Smith started the final game of last season for the Ravens and finished with 22 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown against a pretty good Steelers team so he can get it done. An injury for Thomas Jones is possible, even likely, so Musa could be a good choice as a deep bench player.
