MLB Trade Rumors: Jake Peavy, Manny Ramirez & Mike Jacobs

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillies for winning the 2008 World series!  Now the countdown to the free agent begins on November 14th.  To kick off the run-up, let's see what FOXSports' Ken Rosenthal as to say.

Amongst updates on Manny Ramirez, Mark Teixeira and the closer market, Ken Rosenthal reports the talks between the San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves are on hold as the Padres ask for five players in return for Jake Peavy and speculates the deal could hinge on whether the Braves take SS Khalil Greene back in the deal.  Greene would immediately become a sleeper SS next season because of his power at the position.

George A. King III and Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post jump right into the Hot Stove talk by reporting industry sources say the New York Yankees will "make a serious push for Manny Ramirez to play right field."  Yeah, just what the Yankees need - an older defensive liability in the outfield.

The Kansas City Royals appear close to adding Florida Marlins 1B Mike Jacobs in exchange for a low-cost major league reliever.  Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star speculates Leo Nunez or Ramon Ramirez could be that reliever.

While Jacobs' OBP (.299 last year, .315 career) would be a drawback, he did slug .514 last season and that is also needed in the Kansas City line-up.  The OBP will draw any criticism the Royals receive because rookie 1B Kila Ka'aihue was well over .400 between AA and AAA last season and hit 37 HRs.  Unfortunately, Ka'aihue also hits from the left side of the plate so a platoon isn't available.

LA Times

reports that signing Manny is one of Ned Colletti’s top 3 priorities this offseason…..probably along with signing/trading for an ace pitcher, and signing Furcal. But Manny as a DH would probably be a better fit for him LT.
Diamond Leung over at the PE reported that Colletti was quoted as saying something to the effect of seeing Martin play more 3b in 2009, so signing a backup catcher is also a priority.
The NY Post guys also reported that Milwaukee has made Prince Fielder available, but no one else has reported the same, except ESPN quoting the NY Post guys.

Colletti

also said he would not put the team’s other needs on hold for Manny……this tells me McCourt may break the bank this offseason.

More on jacobs

From the Miami Herald:

It was unclear what the Marlins would receive in return, but Triple-A right-hander Carlos Rosa has been among the primary names discussed. Rosa’s fastball has been clocked at 96 mph, but he was shut down with a tender arm in mid-August.

Other names believed to be on the Marlins radar include big-league relievers Leo Nunez and Ramon Ramirez, Double-A right-hander Daniel Cortes and Class A right-hander Blake Wood.

(snip)

Jacobs, coming off a career-best 32-homer season, has been deemed expendable due to his poor defense at first and an arbitration-fed salary bump that could put him over $2

What a resounding assessment of Jacobs from his hometown paper!

Manny

I can see the Yankees signing Teixeira before signing Manny, no?

Oh yeah

Defense at 1B should be a higher priority for the Yankees. A good/great defensive 1B makes a under-appreciated contribution to a team.

Money Talks Manny Walks

Here’s a prediction. Manny signs a 4 year deal with the Yankees. 3 years plus an option. $100 Mil. To DH. I also think they will sign Tex and CC but I’m not as sure on their dollar amounts. I’m thinking somewhere in the $400 Mil range for all three of them. Got to fill that new stadium you know.

Same guy, new name.

+2/3s

Word is the Yankees will try and blow away C.C. If he takes the money, here’s to hoping he is not Randy Johnson and can handle NY.
