Fantasy Football Trade: At What Price LaDainian Tomlinson

Can RB Ladainian Tomlinson be acquired in a trade?  Prior to this season, the answer is clearly "no", but LT has found himself largely "ineffective" through four games - a 3.9 YPC and just 74 yards per game.

Is this a good time to sell high or buy low?  LT does have a lot of mileage on him and the YPC may be the canary in the coal mine.  Or one can view the first four games as his "pre-season" after returning form off-season knee surgery.

If you recall two years back

Eli Manning got off to a hot start and LT started slow. I managed to to pull off a trade in week 4 sending Manning and Julius Jones to a team for LT and Alex Smith (QB). At the time the points matched and it filled needs on both teams. I went on to win the league.

LT has a history of starting slow and he doesn’t do much training camp and pre season games, so if you can pick him up for cheaper I’d do it. If I have LT and am in desperate need I’d wait another couple of weeks to see if he really gets going. Then I’d trade him to you can bolster multiple roster spots.

LT does have a history of starting slow

but he’s also had a history of being overworked. I thought going into this year that this could be the season that we finally see him break down. Eight seasons (or so) of 400+ touches will eventually lead to a back breaking down. This could be the year.

Both

The usage and slow starter are the two arguments. I recently offered RBs Michael Turner and Chris Johnson for LT and WR Eddie Royal and was turned down without counter.

I only had one draft with the 1st overall pick, and I took Adrian Peterson.

He is a back that needs to cut

The thing that is often overlooked with LT is the toe. Granted he typically starts off slow, so people are attributing everything to that. However, the toe has really altered his abilities. He can’t cut. He’s not a north-south powerback. He needs to cut to be the LT that we all know.

That said, the toe is getting better. I don’t believe this is your typical turf toe injury and reports are positive. I think this a perfect buy low time. If he continues to heal, he will get better. If not, he’s still pretty darn good. Unless he suffers another injury (and remember, he has never missed a game in his professional career because of injury), there is very little risk that he will get any worse this season.
