Yankees, Blessing in Disguise?

The Yankees are now 13.5 games out of 1st place and tied(TBD) for the 3rd worse record in the AL. They have several high priced, but valueable players who will be Free Agents at seasons end.  They also have NO help in their minors to replace players like, Arod, Posada, Mo, Clemens (LOL) . . .Should Cashman be selling Arod to the highest bidder for players like Andy Laroche/plus or Figgins/Wood or perhaps trying to aquire switch hitting Saltalamachia to repalce the current switch hitting Posada. I would think the Braves, LAD, LAA or even SFG would be willing to part with thier young talent.

I personally doubt that the Yankees organization has the balls to throw in the towel and face the reality of the season. . . .but maybe they will surprise and do so. . .

Any thoughts?

I agree the value on the Yankees' roster is in trades.  I see no reason why they cannot trade a hitter or two and still stay in the play-off hunt.  Would anyone take Abreu?

Is is so crazy to consider trading ARod?

Arod
is just what the Dodgers need....a package including Laroche, Loney and Meloan could do the trick....maybe??

You'd think
The Yankees need corners desperately.  Meloan would be nice.

I don't think the Yankees would accept that offer.  The PR behind trading ARod, and preserving Cashman's job, would necessitate a big name to put on the back pages.  Nomar could fill that bill.

I'm guessing something like Nomar, Betemit, Laroche and a 4th player would do it.  This asusmes both LaRoche and Betemit remember how to field.

Nomar
Good point...the Yankee fans would want a star quality player(s) in return....even though you can't compare the two...he does have the star name.

Nomar
The Dodgers have enough to slake the back pages and still offer some helpful prospects.  it would be a win-win for both teams.

If the Yanks took Nomar, then the Dodgers open a spot for Loney.  The Yanks would also get cost certainty at 1B because Nomar is signed for $8.5MM in 2008.  That is a lot less than the Yanks will be tempted to spend after losing ARod and missing the play-offs.

Betemit and LaRoche can do the same thing in NY that they do in LA - split time at 3B with Wilson filling in at SS and 2B every 25 games.

Huh?
I can't imagine the Yankees having a Marlins-style fire sale. How many teams would be willing to pick up the insane contracts the Yanks have given these guys? The Braves let Furcal walk and will probably let A Jones go as well. I don't see them paying any of the current Yanks' contracts.

Marlins
I think it would make for a very interesting July and August if the Yanks did.  Unlike the Marlins, the Yanks can go right back into the free agent market and committ $50+MM per year to three to six players and be rebuilt in the minors and for 2008.

Bingo!!
That is the exact thinking Cashman and Friends should be mulling over.

It interesting that 9/10 votes were for them not being sellers, I wonder if I phrased it "Should the Yankees be sellers?" if the results would be flip flopped?

Its now up to 14.5 games out of first.
